Con Reports

All of my con reports are over at hildy this year:

Thursday
Friday & Saturday
Sunday
Monday

Because of my travel chaos, I didn't have as much time to get settled and post reports the way I was last year. But the con bustled with activity this year. I met a number of people who were attending their first MediaWest, so hopefully we're getting some new blood. A few more men attending, too, but still majority women. It's almost a pity WisCon has to be scheduled opposite MediaWest, because it'd be an interesting comparison.

Panels

I was on the "Made in Canada" panel this year, discussing all our favorite shows from north of the border, from current shows to old favorites. We talked about the reactions to "Little Mosque on the Prairie" and the contrast to "Corner Gas". We squeed delightfully over "Slings and Arrows" and all wished there'd be more. Alas poor Yorrick. Or something. I swung the spotlight briefly on the "Da Vinci's Inquest" and "Cold Squad" combo. Older shows mentioned included "Traders" and "Street Legal". We diverged a little to talk DVD regions and how grateful some of us that Canadians are in the same region.

I attended four other panels. The Doctor Who audio panel gave a good overview of the Big Finish adventures. The Blood Ties panel seemed divided on how the show was faring. Those who didn't know the books actually felt like they were missing something. The "obscure shows" panel mentioned a whole rafter of shows I'd never heard of and I consider myself always in the small fandom category. The old time radio panel was a blast as usual. The SGA secondary character panel was painful to attend, if you happened to like Cadman or Heightmeyer or basically anyone not Lorne or Zelenka. I'll be honest. I'm more comfortable with SGA fandom on LJ than in person at MediaWest, but maybe it's just the demographics of fans that go.

Hot Fandoms

Supernatural won that award hands down. It was everywhere! Doctor Who & Torchwood were making solid showings, but not nearly as strong as I expected from last year. SG1 was very quiet and SGA was doing well, but showing the signs of a fandom waiting for disaster.

Art Show

Decent art show, but still fairly small. The other media, including jewelry and stuff, have taken over the art show, which is kinda fun and interesting. I lusted over an Egyptian scarab necklace, but I was being a good girl... mostly.

Vids

Four hours worth of gen vids, including a 90 minute return from Apocalypse West. Supernatural covered 80-90% of the vids. I'm really not kidding. I love the show and even I was tired of seeing the same scenes used over and over again. It was always a relief to see other fandoms represented, old and new.

Fannish Loot

No zines or t-shirts this year. I had wanted one of the third season SGA cast shot t-shirts but they either had small or 3X, neither of which were going to fit me. I was tempted by a few of Creative Arts designs, including the Dean & Impala one, but I opted not to.

Stills: Two Blood Ties stills (Henry & Vicki and a solo Vicki shot), one of Weir, a still from "Pegasus Project" with Sheppard and Mitchell overlooking the Gateroom, and an classic movie still from "North by Northwest".

Smaller stills: Third season SGA cast photo, John/Elizabeth and one of Weir.

A Sheppard/Weir keychain

Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver Torch (Flashlight)

Doctor Who Big Finish audio "Chimes of Midnight" (neadods's fannish sale)

"Billy Boyle" (WWII era murder mystery that neadods picked me up a copy at Malice Domestic)
