So I've caught with some tv viewing, except for Atlantis. I watched the first episode of "Painkiller Jane" and actually liked it. The actor playing Andre was kinda hot in a former military way. (Yes, I have a type, quiet.) He reminds me of Lydecker from "Dark Angel". I'm not familiar with the character, though, so I had fewer issues with the translation than I would for other comics made into tv shows. Then again, I liked some of the changes for the "Witchblade" series, especially the wearing more clothes part.
I watched the two SG1 episodes.
The Vala love continues. I'm still torn on the whole Moros/Myrddin/Merlin thing, since I turned the old council leader into something of a manipulative bastard for my Nano novel. Of course all I saw was his hard line attitude towards time travel during a bleak period of Ancient history. It's a little hard to judge the Ancients based on "Before I Sleep" because while it's while they're "in power", they've been fighting a seige war for however many years, so they're hardly in "all their glory". They probably had started to splinter and fight amongst themselves. We only see them interact with humankind. We never see their culture really, how they treat each other. They come off as cold and arrogant, but again that's directed towards humans. I'm sure someone has already noted that Myrddin compared Mitchell & Daniel to Percival and Galahad, two knights known for their quest for the Holy Grail. I'll just roll my eyes at the Guinevere comparison for Carter, casting her as the tragic figure all the men fight for and over. Mordred for Ba'al was perfect though.
The second episode was slow moving. I thought it was interesting how they chose to show Tomin having his faith tested. While yes they had Vala trying to reason with him, Tomin himself saw the contradictions. He raises an interesting issue related to the "true believers" of Origin. He's shown one way through their words. Now he's seeing another. He's seeing how one Prior (and presumably others) can twist the good teachings he's been brought up with into something more twisted. Changing their minds is not going to be as easy as convincing that village. Tomin has only known Origin. He doesn't have the Goa'uld to compare them with.
I also have the new Robin Hood on the dvr I need to decide whether to watch or not. Has BBC America mangled it that badly? Anyone?
Heroes still continues to wow. Not much more I can say than that and still be coherent.
Finally caught up with "Blood Ties" through the two parter. If Lifetime picks up the back nine, I hope they move it to another night than late Sunday night.
"Love Hurts" played off all the "Desperate Housewives"/"Sex in the City" cliches with a little added spice and humor. "You don't have to explain..." "No, explain!" The two boys are just circling each other the whole episode. Part of me just shook my head with "Silly boys!" The other part has been around slash fans too long, because I groused "Oh, make out already!" If you've only seen Craig Veroni as staid Peter Grodin on Atlantis, it's quite interesting seeing him as a sex demon. He was hiding quite a body under those long sleeved blue shirts, I'm just saying. Poor Coreen. No one's letting her have any fun either. Henry's quite protective of her, presumably for Vicki's sake. I loved Henry stealing the kiss. Not how I would have pictured that moment going down. Listening to Emmanuel and Henry comparing notes on modern women afterwards was funny.
The two parter "Heart of Ice"/"Heart of Fire" was painful to watch. They really put Henry through the ringer. If you like torture and flogging and red hot pokers, it's right up your alley. Mendoza wouldn't have known what to do with the Morticia and Gomez...
And Mike is slowly growing on me. Part of me gets why he handed Henry over to Mendoza. He's a cop. When presented with a potential danger, his first instinct is to neutralize it, even if the methods are a little circumspect. The other part of me thinks he should be grateful Henry didn't keep feeding.
I don't get the Julian Sands appeal. I know, I know, that's rank heresy, but he does nothing for me. His character was very hard to swallow, especially the modern version. In the flashbacks, when he's simply playing the party line about the vampires=devils, it's one thing, but once he's crossed the line into vampire territory... I do think it was a nice contrast from the usual vampire movies/tv where the faith is used against them. Henry's still a good Catholic, no matter what his church may think of him. (Something about this two parter reminded me of "Witch Hunter Robin". Even the music at the end of "Heart of Ice" reminded me of "Kyrie" from the soundtrack.)
I liked Coreen with Dr. Sagara. She needs a mentor for her occult interests. The book did raise the question of Sagara's past with Henry. I did get the impression from "Blood Price" they'd known each other a lonnng time. Perversely I'd love Dr. Sagara to meet the Indian coroner Mohadevan... somehow I think they'd get along famously.
The science fiction geek in me is amused at naming the Inquisition guy Mendoza. In Kage Baker's Company series, her main character is an immortal botanist named Mendoza who was first snagged during the Inquisition. I wonder if she's studied chinese herbs...
