Character Info
Character Name: Jaime Reyes
Character’s Age: 17
Fandom: DC Comics
Timeline: After his appearance in Booster Gold #27

Appearance: Beetle armor and civvies. Sorry for no full-body on Jaime out of costume; he usually just wears plain jeans and sneakers.

Well, Jaime is really just a normal-looking guy. He's full-blooded Mexican, so he has all the traits that usually come with that--naturally brown skin, dark eyes and hair. He likes his hair a bit longer than most guys, but not too long, as it's cut mid-neck. Jaime's hair has also got a bit of a natural curve to it and tends to curl up at the ends a little. And while he has been seen without it, he usually has a scraggly little goatee on his chin. It's never a full beard. Just a bit of stubble. He likes to think it makes him look more mature, but it really only makes him look slightly dorkier. This average appearance doesn't lend well to his job: by superhero standards, Jaime isn't terribly impressive. Though he isn't short, he isn't particularly tall, either. I assume he's around average height, perhaps slightly shorter (I'm thinking 5'6" to 5'8", but I don't know if he has a canon height) which doesn't make him look like much when standing next to all the 6-foot-plus superhero men. His build isn't a superhero one either--it's about average, with a little extra lean muscle thanks to sports, some basic martial arts training, and about a year of active superheroing. (In my headcanon, he played soccer for a few years, stopping shortly before he became the Blue Beetle.) His sense of fashion is quite simple and understated as well. A t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers is Jaime's usual outfit. Sometimes he layers with a button-up over a plain t-shirt. Jaime loves button-ups.

The Scarab is the strangest aspect of Jaime's appearance. It's usually not visible because it's hidden under his clothes most of the time, but when the Scarab is active, it (and sometimes his spine) glows a faint blue underneath his skin. The Scarab itself is located at the top of his spine, just under his nape. When he transforms, the Scarab crawls out of his spine (a process that has gradually become much less painful) and grows to the size of a backpack, then proceeding to sit on his back a lot like a real backpack. Its limbs wrap around his torso, and the antennae stick up right behind Jaime's head. The armor itself appears to seep or melt over his body, forming black and dark blue plates that much resemble a beetle's exoskeleton. The armor also completely covers his face to make a black and blue mask that is reminiscent of a luchador's mask. The opposite happens when he changes back to Jaime--the Scarab shrinks back into his spine, and the armor melts away back into the Scarab. His clothes also reappear once he changes back.

History: DC Wikia

History from knightsofgotham:
  • Jaime is mysteriously poofed to Gotham City and informed that he has a bomb implanted in his head. Oops.
  • He learns that Ted Kord is inexplicably still alive and is invited to stay with him and several other heroes at Zatanna Zatara's house, Shadowcrest.
  • After hearing his call for Mouse on the network, Jaime flies to Neo's apartment to help him. Trinity's implant has exploded, leaving the place a mess, her body in a pool of blood on the floor, and Neo in great distress. He leaves without managing to comfort Neo in the least. :(
  • Jaime wakes to spiders in his bed one morning. After relating the experience to Nikolae Thomas on the network, they agree to meet later that night to learn more about why they've been trapped in Gotham.
  • Jaime and Nikolae meet up at the police station and learn that they are from different universes. The seeds of bromance are sown.
  • Jaime helps spread word about attempts to remove/destroy the implants, and offers to help Neo remove them, as well.
  • All attempts to contact people outside of Gotham fail, as do all attempts at removing his own implant.
  • He has a brief conversation with Willow Tenbrook about family--he'll recognize her voice, at least.
  • After learning from Zatanna that Ted Kord has been taken captive by the Joker, Jaime and Booster Gold go to rescue him. It ends badly. Jaime gets crowbarred and is forced to watch everybody get tortured. ;-; Zatanna disappears.
  • After being briefly age-skipped to his thirties and speaking to a child Nikolae over the network (and not remembering any of it after being returned to his original age) Jaime visits Ted and Booster in the hospital.
  • While at the hospital, the Joker manages to taint the hospital's supply of blood. Jaime helps Nikolae, Hush, and Red Robin fight back against the Joker's goons.
  • Zatanna returns, and Jaime, Booster, Ted, and Clark meet her at Shadowcrest.
  • Neo deactivates the implants. Jaime attempts to leave, but he is unsuccessful--every attempt simply brings him back to Gotham again.
  • After 10 weeks in Gotham, Jaime tries to leave one last time and finds himself drawn to Bell Pointe...
Personality:
Jaime is a total sweetheart. He's honest, down-to-earth, and incredibly genuine. He respects his elders, comes home on time, does all his chores...basically, a normal teenage boy living with his normal family in his normal home.

Well. Normal minus the superpowers, of course.

Through some strange twist of fate, Jaime has a horrible violent alien superweapon stuck to his spine that he can do anything with; instead of trying to get rid of it or letting it take complete control of him, however, he immediately accepts that he's got to be responsible when dealing with the Scarab. He learns how to use it correctly AND for good causes, and his inherent goodness is even able to somehow glitch the Scarab into developing its own sense of free will. (The Scarab's got its own attitude. Sometimes Jaime talks to it out loud and forgets, which makes him look a little bit crazy sometimes.) He's able to protect the innocent, save the day, and get through school without compromising any of the values that he's had since he was first introduced, and he's able to do this without alienating the people closest to him. He's a good person with an open heart: in short, a superhero who really is a hero. He isn't a show-off or a braggart because of his abilities, either--in fact, he's usually impressed by other, more experienced heroes, looking up to them, seeking their advice, and living by their example. However, he isn't afraid to call anyone out if they've done something that he believes is morally wrong.

Speaking of his values, Jaime keeps them close: to him, his family and friends are the most important thing in his life, and he'll do anything to make sure that they're safe. Of course, he's still a teenager, and he does have those moments where he forgets to take out the garbage or has a little argument with his sister, but he does love his family and always will. A particular sore spot to him, though, is being separated from his loved ones for long periods of time. Early on in his career, he was accidentally sent into the Bleed, a space between universes. Though he perceived it as only a few minutes, a whole year passed on Earth without him--during that time, his father was shot, his best friend Paco got involved with a gang of metahumans, his OTHER best friend Brenda's father beat her badly enough to get her hospitalized, Brenda's aunt and gang boss La Dama had her brother-in-law killed in a "car crash" as payback, and everyone, especially his mother, was very affected by his sudden disappearance. Needless to say, he wasn't feeling too good about that and is still harboring a bit of guilt. His biggest fear is that something will hurt his loved ones and he won't be around to prevent it.

As he's still a relatively new superhero and the successor to the much-loved second Blue Beetle Ted Kord, Jaime occasionally has times where he feels inadequate or discouraged when he makes a mistake. His inexperience and his acute knowledge knowledge of that inexperience are his greatest flaws: Jaime is his own greatest critic and has a tough time forgiving his own missteps and faults. He tends to compare himself to other superheroes; he idolizes Ted in particular and has read up on all of his notes and old strategies. Still, though, he strives to become his own person instead of living in someone else's shadow. His sense of humor can also turn a bit sarcastic or snarky, sometimes in a way that is self-deprecating, but he always means well in the end.

Powers/Abilities:
On his own, Jaime does not have any powers, aside from being bilingual and of moderate intelligence. (Mun does not speak Spanish, so I apologize for any Babelfish fail in advance.) He knows a bit about hand-to-hand combat and is able to form some pretty clever strategies, but his real superpowers lie within the Blue Beetle Scarab.

The Blue Beetle Scarab (Khaji Da) is bonded to Jaime's spine. Previously, it belonged to Blue Beetle I (Dan Garrett) and Blue Beetle II (Ted Kord). Dan partially activated it using magic, damaging it, and Ted further damaged it by exposing it to Booster Gold's time cooties. It gives him a HUGE selection of powers, many of which he isn't aware of or willing to use at all (it's apparently capable of WMD-level force). If Jaime is ever incapacitated in a battle, however, the Scarab will take over; it doesn't have many reservations about its abilities. Since it is attached to Jaime's spine, removing the Scarab is dangerous, if not fatal, for him. Additionally, Jaime is the only one who can hear the Scarab, unless it chooses to externally broadcast itself in some way.

Jaime's main powers include...
  • Blue Beetle Armor - Jaime's armor is made of a tough alien material. While it can be punctured, it does take some force to do it. Blunt force will still be able to hurt him, but the armor is strong enough to withstand entering the Earth's atmosphere without disintegrating. The armor can also change shape and partially form: Jaime can do things like turn his arm into a blade, create a shield, sprout wings...
  • Scarab Sight - This power is active whether or not Jaime is wearing the armor. The Scarab is able to detect things that are hidden in other dimensions, see in the dark, and study people around Jaime--for example, Jaime once determined that a woman was pregnant very early in her term.
  • Tracking - Jaime can track energy (including magical energy), several types of signals, and people that he has met at least once before. Jaime's also able to pinpoint his own location.
  • Flight, Strength, Agility - He's got wings and a suit of alien armor! Basic deal here.
  • Energy Blasts - Jaime can turn his arm into a laser cannon. Those things sting, so watch out.
  • Insulation - The suit protects Jaime from heat and cold. It isn't invincible, however--extreme temperatures will still hurt. He can also breathe...in space.
He also has several miscellaneous powers. (The Scarab's like a superpowered alien Swiss army knife, really.) These include but are not limited to: Creation of magnetic fields, wi-fi and telephone, printing, re-forming Jaime's clothes after he's deactivated the armor (both the paper from printing and his clothes are made of dead skin cells and misc. waste, very gross), and simulating radiation (he's done fake Kryptonite once).

Limitations:
Woo. Okay. Jaime's powers are incredibly hax, so the limits are gonna be harsh on him...

He will still be able to speak freely to the Scarab at any time, but any transformations with the Blue Beetle armor will come at a cost. He can only remain completely in suit for an hour a day. After that hour, the Scarab will be forced to shut the armor off for the next 24 hours. If Jaime tries to push the Scarab and transforms again, it will cause him the same amount of pain that it did when he first became the Blue Beetle (read: a large foreign object entering/exiting his spinal column and an intensely painful burning sensation wherever the armor forms). Jaime will start to get a headache that will quickly increase in severity for about half an hour, after which he will collapse and lose consciousness. And the Scarab won't reform his clothes if Jaime pushes it to that point, either. Once he wakes up, a moderate headache will linger for a day or so.

Furthermore, the suit itself will be quite powered down. Most everything will be gone, save for the wings, the blade, the shield, the laser cannon, and the armor itself. Scarab Sight and tracking will both be gone entirely. The cannon will be less powerful--where it could stun and hurt giant monsters and whatnot, it can only stun and slightly injure a human. The armor will be easier to crack as well.

Log/Third Person Sample:

It was on his fifth try that Jaime finally got out.

For hours he'd flown through the fog in one direction, somehow looping back to the same half-shrouded radio tower again and again and again. Even he, stubbornly optimistic as he was, was beginning to lose hope at this point. But, at last, the chirping of the Scarab sang through his head.

[JAIME REYES has cleared GOTHAM city limits], it announced triumphantly.

A wide grin spread on his face as Jaime cheered. Finally--finally, he'd broken free! No more tall buildings, no more dark nights or broken phones or the Joker or that damn fog. And, most importantly, no more being homesick. Jaime had been gone for more than two months now. He was sure his mother would want to kill him, or at least lock him up in his room for the rest of his teenage life, but, hell, he'd welcome that, as long as he got to see his family and friends again after so long.

"Scarab," he said, "we're going back to El Paso. ASAP." It made an affirmative noise in response and for one glorious moment, Jaime's spirits soared as high as he did--

--until his body lurched. His heart sunk. Something was wrong--why wasn't the Scarab flying?

"Wait, what's--"

Whatever he was planning on saying then was quickly forgotten; a cry rose in his throat as he suddenly dropped through the air like a stone.

"S-Scarab!!" Jaime managed to yell, "What the hell's going on?!"

[Error, cannot maintain altitude!] the Scarab reported, sounding more and more harried-- [Error error ERROR ERROR JAIME REYES ALERT ALERT CANNOT FACILITATE EMERGENCY LANDING--]

The wind screamed in his ears as, to his dismay, the Blue Beetle armor began to shrink back into his spine and treetops quickly came into view--oh, God, not now, not like this--"Change back! Change back!! I'm not going to the hospital with everything broken again, Scarab! Come on!"

Obediently, if not a little slower than usual, the Scarab began to reform his armor. His body, arms, legs: all were covered, and the armor began to form around his face...but not quickly enough. He landed in a tree, meeting a branch face-first. Disdainfully, Jaime spit out a few leaves and carefully began to climb down.

"Scarab, are you okay? What was that all about?"

It answered with a few absent chimes. Not okay. It wasn't automatically telling him where they were, either, which worried him. Luckily for him, there was a nice, friendly-looking sign that announced it for him...

"Belle...Pointe? Where the heck is that?"

Journal Entry/First Person Sample:

Uh, hey there, everyone. So...I guess I'm in Bell Point now? Belle Pointe? Well, whatever--can someone please tell me what's going on around here? I don't know where this place is or how far I've gone from Gotham... And I can't seem to get out at all, either. Whoever's been messing with me this whole time--and I'm pretty sure someone is--if you're still out there, I'm getting really tired of playing Dorothy in the Land of Oz here. It's not funny anymore. It never was in the first place.

I just want to go home already. I want to see my family.

Please.
