Ideally, i'd blog in chronological order - but right now, i'm too lazy to sift through the melbourne photos etc because its a lot easier to blog about hong kong since i was there for the shortest period, there isn't very much to blog about other than food and my first ever trip to disneyland.
Here's a little background: When i was younger, I used to go to Hong Kong pretty often since my mum had business events there I'd happily follow her and well, indulge in roast pigeon and roast goose (seriously, why those two items are unavailable in SIngapore is beyond me). As I grew older, school got in the way of things, and then secondary school happened and I spent most of my time either in school or traveling with the AEP bunch - so yada yada and Hong Kong became the forgotten country I used to visit and my ever halting (and minimal) canto died along with it - also because my grandma gave up on teaching me and now speaks to me in a mixture of canto, chinese and special english.
Since it's been a while since i visited hong kong, I was super excited this time around.. and while I am sad to blog that my apprehensions about their general (lack of) friendliness were true - my other apprehensions were knocked down pretty quickly upon my arrival there. So yes.. I haven't been there since 1998 and since then.. they've really grown and developed, and I fully comprehend and understand why they receive so much attn from the global community than singapore.. because really, the country is quite remarkable. Service wise, food-wise and without a doubt, accessibility.
Because I'm a lazygerr, I'm just going to blog about the highlights of Hong Kong 2013 and make a virtual note to myself places must visit again:
Tim Ho Wan
seriously... their har gao was amazing, I actually dreamt about it last night... also their famous char siew bao was mindblowing and the chee cheong fun... was glorious.
Dragon King
I for one, really really enjoyed the food here. Must tries: the sesame spotted xlbs, egg tarts and tau huey
the carrot cake was pretty phenomenal too
this has to be reserved in advance - but seriously, the best tau huey I've ever had in my life.
(Also in the running for the best thing I hate in HK)
their roast pork was amazing too - imo it didn't leave as lasting an impression as the egg tart and tau huey did - but that's probably because i've had a similar taste of such roast pork at the chinese restaurant at Regent Hotel (it was much pricer tho D:)
Tao Heung
Best Beancurd Skin/Prawn dish
Uhm.. this was phenomenal - I was half tempted to order another serving for myself if not for the fact that we had already overordered #fml
Mak's Noodles
This store pretty much redfined my conception of what the perfect bowl of wanton mee would taste like - I've traditionally preferred the dry sort, packed with a variation of spicy, sweet and tangy sauces.... but at this place the soup just takes the cake
I tried the wanton noodles, wanton + dumplings noodles and the wanton + beef tendon noodles (we went there twice). While the wanton noodles on its own is amazing, I reckon all beef tendon lovers will be doing themselves a favour by ordering the wanton + beef tendon item... and on a side note, the dumplings were delicious too
Well other than lots and lots of food (if you're a fb friend of mine you should already be well aware of the album - which should really be retitled "Food in Hong Kong" I also made my maiden visit to Disneyland!
... and i covered mickey's face
hurr, that day also happened to be our 3rd year anniversary~
haha I think I enjoyed the day a lot more than he did but oh well #lyfe
happy third!
fyi
I actually almost cried (well i admit i teared) during the fireworks show at the end - I'm well aware that the HK disneyland is one of the worst in the world (apparently its fighting for that title with disney paris) but I think the nostalgia and beauty of it all (nonetheless) just choked up my tear ducts and it was really an amazing way to spend my last night in HK.
