Third post in two days - I am clearly on a roll, even if i'm super sleepy because i couldn't sleep no thanks to the crazy thunder and lightening last night + my saturday morning task of driving the mother to her shop and buying breakfast (90% of the time, I get tau huay)
HEE HEE AMBUSHED COW THIS MORNING WITH A GIFT!!!! :)
(she's going to kill me when she sees this post)
So on Wednesday Mark and I had our first date since restaurant week and we headed to Gayatri for indian food and...
WENT TO HOLLAND TO REFILL MY BALLOONS!!!! WHOOPPEEE!!
Because I'm relatively broke (hence the decision to stay home 90% of the time) I could only afford to refill 2 balloons - hurrhurr and of course I chose to refill my "thanks a latte" one so now I have a huge floating latte balloon in my room all the time ♥
So here's the thing about it - when I head to holland, I can't avoid a trip to Phoon huat and there were candy melts...
look at how gorgeous the batter was!
and I can't resist fresh cake out of the oven... so uhm.. because I concluded that since I was going to crumb the cake and turn it into a cake pop mess anyway, I proceeded to nibble off the cake creating numerous craters in my beautifully baked chocolate cake :'( why am i so greedy.
So here's the thing about cake pops - it requires you to bake a cake, wait for it to cool, crumb it, make the frosting to mash it in, roll it into balls, get them to stay on lollipop sticks, refrigerate them and melt more chocolate and attempt to get them onto those round balls on the lollipop sticks - a very difficult way to eat cake to be quite frank.
It's also a great pity that you have to crumb beautifully fresh baked cake out of the oven :( and mash it into a form and shape which looks gross and take forever to mould them etc. Idk, at the end of the day, even though my cake pops are delicious, i can't decide if I love that bakerella revolutionized cake into cake pops or if I'm annoyed that she revolutionized it and led on stupid people like me to believe lies like "cake pops are easy to make".
Also if you google cake pops, everyone uses styrafoam blocks to stick their cake pops in - and they cost about $2 onwards? Alternatively, you can head to phoon huat or bake it yourself and pay $20 for a cake pop drying stand ~ because I am el cheapo girl 1990, I took neither option and ran around the house like a nut case for a good 2 hours because I had nothing to hold up my cake pops (or the soon to be cake pops)
So i found an old photo frame box.. and proceeded to poke holes in them and created my own cake pops stand!
should totally be an art and craft teacher - haha my parents came home and were mightily impressed by my invention - although my mum was highly supportive and suggested i consider that option in the future my dad grumbled and reminded me that i'm in law school ~ oh father.
Chilling out in a jar
I should have done a better job with the coating tbh, but i was trying to juggle too many things so the coating didn't come out as I had planned it to - still looks pretty though, but I have grand plans for improvement!
Buddy: "GIVE ME"
here's another thing - this is actually the first time i've ever had a cake pop because the concept of cake mashed with frosting has never sounded enticing to me ~ so i jazzed it up a little and mashed my beautiful chocolate cake (weeps) with dark chocolate ganache instead, and that was an amazing combination that led to a super delicious chocolate cake filling that balanced out the sweetness of the candy melt coating
because they took forever to make ~ i insisted on taking numerous photos with them
TA DA!!! THE MAKE SHIFT CAKE POPS STAND!!! hahaha i attempted to make it look prettier with a line of hello kitty tape
NOM
& this is my ~I can be an arty farty tumblr coolio person too~ photo
ICE. LEMON. TEA
GET IT GET IT??? how brilliant is this photo concept!!! hurr, and it all came about only because i couldn't squeeze my cube of ice into the bottle -.-
finally, question of the day - should i attempt to sell cake pops for mother's day next week? mine are currently sitting in a glass jar and the 12 together look like a pretty bouquet of cake pops!
Of course there's improvement to be made and if I do go through with the idea i'd ensure that every piece sold is perfect... but I can't decide if i should take the risk and attempt a little sale given that:
1. I barely know anyone
2. I cannot imagine who would buy anything from me
So here's the idea - if i sell, because of the amount of work and the costs, it'll be $4.50 per cake pop (also because my cake pops are kinda big.. mainly because i think a small round thing on such a long lollipop stick looks absolutely ridiculous and disproportionate) and maybe i'd sell a bunch of 6 at $25 and of course they'd be wrapped up pretty with glass jars and ribbons and plastic coverings
Mainly for the experience really.. because on further calculation... I might lose money instead BUT IF THE LONG TERM PLAN IN MIND WORKS OUT... I suppose this idea might be a good way of assessing the viability of my long term plans.. hmm
how now brown cow? should I even consider?
