The title is a lie really, the first thing i shouldn't have done was stick that piece of assam fish/ ladies finger into my mouth because my throat has died on me - once again.
fyi if you were at st igs for 6pm mass today and noticed someone hacking her throat out, and leaving church a couple of times to be a nuisance outside and cough her lungs out - THAT WAS ME.
On other news, i am lusting after a plate of soy sauce with specks of chilli padi and a huge bowl of mee hoon kueh covered in green leafy vegetables, soft tofu and chunks of seasoned mince meat. I am instead.. having the combination of bland food and my aching palate is dying for exciting tasting food.. which my throat/ cough/ immune system is not prepared for.
Anyway, because I am bored, and a relac jack - according to lumps - which i really shouldn't be but am anyway... (I have a sneaking suspicion doing that I burnt out after doing that damn research paper, which is really stupid if you think about it because that was a mere 4/ 20 creds of this sem #stupiddecisionsimake) SO ITS BLOGGING TIME!!! (also because I'll feel awfully guilty if I sleep now knowing that 99% of my schoolmates are up and doing work.. and probably will continue doing so for the next 8 hours, as me and buddy sleep with the fan blasting into our faces - air conditioning makes my throat dry)
Favourite restaurant ever - probably the main reason why I love restaurant week so much
The one/ two time(s) in the year I can afford lunch at Au Jardin
No joke friends. they literally have the best food in Singapore in my humble opinion. In addition, their service is impeccable, serving sizes spot on and of course the food - is just brilliant. What i love about Au Jardin more than anywhere else is that the food doesn't aim to be pretentious with fancy smancy set ups (okay lah, some times they do, but its done very elegantly) and even though they don't throw in large chunks of expensive ingredients like foie gras or truffle, their food is beautifully elegant and rather perfect all together.
what makes it better is that it's near school! so I don't feel half as guilty for sneaking out to the botanics for lunch!
we were really excited btw - because AU JARDIN IS SIMPLY THE BEST.
mousse bouche (i suspect that my spelling of this is never correct and yet I never bother to do a google check - lazy i am)
Watermelon juice with pink grapefruit foam and a seaweed cracker
simple. but so very perfect.
if you can see it, there's an imprint of Au Jardin's front on the butter
all these little touches - makes me want to go back!
Mark's starter of prawns
it was absolutely delightful. I reeeaaally liked it
my scallop and hamachi ceviche
it was stupendous.
happy campers :)
Mark's main
If you're thinking that's beehoon - how very wrong you are, it's potato noodles and very good potato noodles at that
also, if you're about to question his choice of pork for the main - don't... BECAUSE IT WAS SO INSANELY GOOD.
my beef
I generally dislike ordering steak most of the times because i often find it too heavy and meaty for me (i tend to order fish and hope that it turns out perfect.. because badly cooked fish is horrendous)
but at Au Jardin, with their portioning and system of cooking - there is never really a worry that it's going to be heavy
With due respect to NOVUS, steak is often paired with a serving of potatoes (in whatever shape or form) and that's perfectly understandable
but that's exactly what I don't fancy, and Au Jardin got it spot on.
Instead, I got a smatter of vegetables and pea puree which complemented the steak perfectly and more importantly didn't leave me feeling like I had eaten a cow (hahaha get the pun!?!?!?)
Textures of berries and yuzu sorbet
I mean seriously, look at how photogenic their presentation is?! Unlike NOVUS's crime scene looking starter, and my foie gras starter that looked a bit like a mini swamp contained in a glass cup
(disclaimer: i thought NOVUS got taste spot on.. just not presentation - that being said, Au Jardin has had a little mis-step in the past imo too, if you refer to rweek2011 posts
http://w-iredblind.livejournal.com/tag/restaurant%20week%202011, they had a swampy looking asparagus soup with scallops and tortellini surfacing like polluted lily pads.. rather unimpressive looking even if it was delightful
FYI:
)
ANYWAY back to my beautiful dessert - it complemented the steak perfectly. Even if the steak was well done without being too heavy,a dessert in the shape of a fruity filled cold dessert was a perfect ending.
Mark's variations of chocolate
very good too! and he thought it was better than the varlhona test at NOVUS
BEST PART OF AU JARDIN
LOVE IT
WOULD HARBOUR BUCKETS OF THIS IN MY ROOM AND EAT IT FOR FOREVER.
they serve petit fours at the end of the meal and their madelines ARE THE BEST.
no. i really haven't had madelines any better than theirs - it's like a secret recipe I need to steal
Coffee and petit fours at no additional charge
1. love au jardin
2. love au jardin even more when it's restaurant week
3. au jardin is the best?! harlow, free petit fours and coffee to end lunch - it doesn't get better than that (yes, some places don't serve coffee/ tea at the end of the meal)
imo. if you're headed to restaurant week or headed to an expensive restaurant for a celebration of sorts: skip equinox (waste of money and waste of time imo - plus parking so expensive!), try novus once (because the food is mostly good and the varlhona test is a must try), try forlino once (because the foie gras starter is so good, it might be the best thing i've eaten in my life)
but go to au jardin - because it's simply the best
OKAY. TIME TO GO BACK TO WHAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DOING
ie. a student with 2 major exams within a week, and NO SENSE OF URGENCY. I HATE MYSELF.
