Well I have finally finished my namesake... The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner (to the uninitiated: Sound and the Fury + William Faulkner = William Fury... get it now? lame I know but give a bookwarm his stupid jokes) All in all it was pretty good. This time I actually read some stuff on it before I read it, so I'd have a better idea who was who (and which is which...) I loved the Jason Compson section. As Markus said at one point "Jason Compson is a real asshole" and quite frankly I couldn't love him anymore because of it. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood (probably) but I just love listening to his caustic cynicism. Maybe it's just fun reading about people that took the extra step you never took or don't have the courage to. Or maybe idle morbid (or is that moribund?) curiosity. Who the hell knows.
I also finished at the beginning of the week Diplomacy by Henry Kissinger. I've already discussed this in previous posts and I still recommend it. I'm going to start reading From Beiruit to Jerusalem by Thomas Friedman. It won some awards years ago and is supposed to be really good. He's a journalist that lived for a while in Beirut, then Jerusalem and writes about the whole middle east situation. My brother read another one of his books "The Lexus and the Olive Tree" and highly recommended it. Maybe at some point I'll get around to that one too. I ended up borrowing FBtJ so I wouldn't spend money on yet another book. Instead I may just order four other books. I need help. Or a library card. Whatever.
What books might I get? One on International Law. One or two of Gabriel Garcia Marques's books. Maybe Islamic Liberalism (a book recommended by my arabic teacher). Maybe a book on AI. dunno. We all have our addictions. Gotta cope with life somehow. Anyway if any of these sound interesting, let me know. I'll forward the Amazon discount thingy to you.
Anyway time to start yet another week. Forecast for (04/28-0502):
Sunny, warm typical California weather that I never enjoy because I'm inside all day
in front of a computer. 75% chance of missing deadlines and people being a pain in
my ass. 60% chance of burgeoning social life going to naught. 20% chance of
actually getting something worthwhile done. 5% chance of something going right. At
least the pollen count will be low...
Have a good week all. Maybe if this is a bad week that means I'll at least get some writing done... hmmm.....
