A Surprise Contributor to Climate Change? Food Waste (theguardian.com)

The Guardian writes: About a third of all the world's food goes to waste, and producing, transporting and letting that food rot releases 8-10% of global greenhouse gases. If food waste were a country, it would have the third-biggest carbon footprint after the U.S. and China...

Food waste fell sharply last year during lockdown as people stuck at home began to use leftovers, plan meals and freeze food rather than throw it away. Once lockdown ended, however, food waste rose again.

Their conclusion? "Cutting food waste can help the climate."

A Critical Ocean System May Be Heading For Collapse Due to Climate Change (sfgate.com)
Human-caused warming has led to an "almost complete loss of stability" in the system that drives Atlantic Ocean currents, a new study has found - raising the worrying prospect that this critical aquatic "conveyor belt" could be close to collapse.

Animals 'Shapeshifting' in Response To Climate Crisis, Research Finds (theguardian.com)
Warm-blooded animals are changing their physiology to adapt to a hotter climate, the scientists found. This includes getting larger beaks, legs and ears to better regulate their body temperature.

Scientists Aim For Clearer Messages On Global Warming (npr.org)
Here's a sentence that's basically unintelligible to most people: Humans must mitigate global warming by pursuing an unprecedented transition to a carbon neutral economy. A recent study found that some of the most common terms in climate science are confusing to the general public.
