In a quiet corner of the Nexus, two teenage boys have taken over a sofa, packet of chocolate digetives and a reading lamp. They're both dressed in what appear to be uniform dressing gowns (identical stiff blue felt) over flannel pyjamas (individual) and slippers -- they look like poster children for boarding school of the 1950s. One is almost ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, while Harley is smart she is also not the most inclined toward literature perusal, so she has very little idea what the two boys are talking about, other than the most cursory of 'I go to high school!' bits.

However, they look interesting, and that's really all she needs - plus, there's always, "winding up teachers is a good pastime, if you don't mind me saying so~"

She looks like a 'normal' teenager today, in jeans and a jacket that's... not neon green, and smiles a little knowingly. The only really noticeable weirdness is a healing black eye, but she's wearing giant purple sunglasses. ... Harley is also currently suspended from her public school, so perhaps she is not the best person to discuss this subject.

"Depends on the teacher," Will says, looking up from the book. "Some of them are ... well."

And giant purple sungasses are 'normal'? Will is more used to modern clothing than Bran, but those do give him pause.

"Some of them, yeah. If you have a teacher long enough though, you can tell who you can mess with and who you can't."

They're... normal for her, to be totally fair. At least there are no zombies on her clothes today.

Will nods. "We've had Mr Matthews since third form. We know that he is ... well, I suppose you'd say a staunch defender of English literature to the exclusion of anything else, while Bran is nothing if not Welsh."

Thank heavens for small mercies. Still, it's not like Will can talk. Pyjamas and all.

"He sounds stuffy at best, honestly." She fidgets a little, from habit. "So he could use a little excitement anyway." Harley, that is ... probably not what they are planning at all, stop it.

Stuffy's one way to put it. So are strict, bad-tampered and dictatorial, but Will's not going to say that. "He's not the most popular teacher we've got, for good reason," he explains. "And since he's going to go off at us anyway, I suppose we may as well deserve it."

"May as well, because if you don't deserve it, what's the point? So I say make it count! So even if you did exactly what he'd want, he'd still go off on you? That doesn't sound like the best business practice, to me."

Will nods. "Every school's got a Mr Matthews. Bitter, just shy of retirement, and still teaching the same stuff he taught when he started. We think he's still holding a grudge for something that happened during the Medieval period."

"Ughhh, I had a teacher like that last year. She was my math teacher, and I'm pretty sure she hated every student because she made all of our school lives hell for the entire year."

Will nods. "There you go. I'm not sure that actively antagonising him is the wisest idea, but Bran feels strongly that if we must suffer than he should too." Will's shrug indicates that Bran is the driving force here.

"If you're suffering anyway, getting a little revenge might make it not as bad? I mean, it's not like you're stomping on his begonias or anything." Harley feels, very strongly, that this is a good example.

"Well, I don't mind," Will says. "But we are going to get at least a lecture." He makes a face at Bran's introduction. "How do you do," he says. "And I'm not half-asleep either."

"Lectures aren't too bad, if you know how to tune them out and look like you're still listening," she smiles, shrugging. "You look pretty awake to me."

"That might be my problem," Will admits. "Especially since we know most of Mr Matthews lectures off by heart now." He pulls a face. "We've come from night, though that's probably obvious."

"Ohhh, he's one of those types with all the same ones, is he?" she nods a little, knowingly, before continuing. "I could tell. It was afternoon at home when I popped in here, I've been... a while."

"More variations on a theme." Will counts them off on his fingers. We've got the 'what ungrateful tykes we are' reel, the 'in his day' speech, the 'he'll never know why they abolished corporal punishment' speech, and the 'he didn't serve in Her Majesty's Army so we could butcher Her Majesty's Language' -- I think that's all."
