Do yourself a favor and doooon't click on the comments. A LOT of people in there are blaming the soldier for the dog not being microchipped or tagged. Granted, both my pups are chipped, but they don't wear their collars if they're at home. This really could have happened to anyone's pet. :( (And let's not gloss over the part where the fucking procedures weren't followed properly kthxbai.)
Absolutely -- collars that have the clicky fastenings instead of proper buckles can be broken out of. Which is why they're called "break-away collars"! And Darwin has absolutely broken out of more than his fair share of breakaways. Even a regular flat collar with a buckle can and will slip over a dog's head -- and I know I prefer to err on the side of too loose over too tight when fitting collars on Darwin and Syd.
(And I keep thinking THIS CANNOT BE THE ONLY DOG THEY FUCKED UP ON. And how many lost pets got put down because someone fucked the paperwork?)
I can't remember how much it cost to chip Darwin -- it was done when he was neutered at 8 mos old (he's almost 5 years). Sydney was chipped at the shelter before we adopted her for an extra $25, I think?
She made it out of Afghanistan and she dies because of fricking paperwork.
Just. Damn.
