First off, yes, this date was a missed opportunity of massive numerology and nose-thumbing for all. That nose-thumbing bit is an upside, may I add, not a downside. If the Brits are going to start postponing things on account of propriety, they'd have to start with Christmas. (Luckily, I'm fairly sure they're cooler than that and it really was publishing time constraints. Those two weeks look a lot longer from this vantage point.)
With that out of the way...
I took the Mugglenet quiz rather than the Leaky one. I get the feeling that the answers for a lot of the questions on the Leaky version will prove woefully inadequate.
1. Hogwarts will be closed for the entire year. True
(The governors were incredibly cowed by one former Death Eater, so never mind a whole lot of Death Eaters when Voldemort is at large.)
{2. Harry will enroll in Year 7 classes at Hogwarts.
3. Ron will enroll in Year 7 classes at Hogwarts.
4. Hermione will enroll in Year 7 classes at Hogwarts.
5. Harry will take N.E.W.T. exams.
6. Ron will take N.E.W.T. exams.
7. Hermione will take N.E.W.T. exams.
8. Harry will be Head Boy at Hogwarts.
9. Ron will be Head Boy at Hogwarts.
10. Hermione will be Head Girl at Hogwarts. } Obviously false.
11. Harry will teach Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. False
(JKR said he wouldn't)
12. The DADA teacher at Hogwarts will be (fill in the blank) nonexistent.
13. Harry's scar is a Horcrux. Hedging my bets
(But Harry himself is not. You can't make an accidental Horcrux, and Harry would be in constant agony besides, as in the possession. I know it seems like the scar shouldn't be either from that, but someone put forth an elegant theory on the matter that has it both ways. For the purposes of the quiz, it's false.)
14. Nagini is a Horcrux. False
(Voldemort wouldn't entrust his soul to anything mortal.)
15. Slytherin's locket is a Horcrux. True
16. Hufflepuff's cup is a Horcrux. True
(Goes without saying, really.)
17. The locket that nobody could open at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place is a Horcrux. True
(JKR said we'd identify one of the Horcruxes within a week of publication. This is what we came up with.)
18. Harry will keep his Horcrux quest secret from the Order of the Phoenix. False
(Harry needs to get over his every-mentor-I-touch-dies funk , and fast. He has too much to learn not to, and stating his purpose will help things along. But see one of my more tentative theories below.)
19. R.A.B. = Regulus A. Black. True
(Thank you, Holland.)
20. R.A.B. has already destroyed the locket-Horcrux. False
(Else, the chase would be pretty pointless. Also, this is probably where That Damn Mirror comes into play, and for it to provide "more help than you think", it has to be something substantive. Especially as that was a post-OotP interview.)
21. Voldemort already knows (by the end of Half-Blood Prince) that R.A.B. took the locket-Horcrux from the cave. False
22. Voldemort already knows (by the end of Half-Blood Prince) that Harry is seeking his Horcruxes. False
(It would better explain why Bellatrix has fallen out of favor - yeah, I think she delivered the locket, and let a little too much slip to Regulus about it as well - and it ties to Lucius, but it's too much, too soon. I'm sure that once they destroy the fourth or fifth Horcrux, though, it'll be connected enough that Voldemort will know.)
23. Albus Dumbledore is really dead. True
(Poison, Avada Kedavra, and a hundred-foot fall - I think she was actively campaigning to head off another Sirius Denial. But in the end, she just had to say it herself.)
24. On top of the "Lightning-Struck Tower," Dumbledore was asking Snape to kill him. False, false, false
(Excuse me for a moment. This'll take a while.
As of the end of HBP, the Order is leaderless, will need to change headquarters, and, Fidelius depending, may not even be able to recruit. Hogwarts is poised to close its doors or, barring that, open as a ghost of a school thanks to mass panic, and short of security charms that can never be replaced. Above all, the Horcrux hunt just got a lot tougher.
And for what?
To save Draco? It seems to me there was a pretty good plan already in motion that didn't involve Dumbledore's death. Indeed, the Freezing Charm makes sense if it's to keep Harry from interfering with their little heart-to-heart. It makes less than no sense if it's to let Harry witness the whole thing and give him the completely wrong impression.
So Snape can go deeper into Voldemort's confidences? Even if Voldemort does put his confidence in anyone, Dumbledore's working hypothesis doesn't believe so. And to what purpose? He can't very well pass information to the Order now that he's murdered their leader, after all.
No, the events on the Tower were all to Voldemort's gain.
Dumbledore doesn't beg, you say? That's absolutely right. He begs for neither life nor death. But when you've taken someone under your wing as Dumbledore did Snape, betrayal is a crushing blow indeed.
Then what was the conversation Hagrid overheard? I don't know. I expect we'll find out. But somehow I doubt it was "Kill me on the off chance that I am incredibly weakened when Malfoy's scheme finally comes to fruition." And that goes double for Snape filling the DADA post; it may not even have occurred after the Vow. (Incidentally, can you imagine the scene where Snape tells Dumbledore he made the Vow in any seriousness?)
Was he dying anyway? Shouldn't he then have told Harry how he destroyed that ring? How to detect magical traces? Or if it's the potion you're talking about, Slughorn is just as versed in potions and the Dark Arts as Snape is. He could halt the poison at least enough for Dumbledore to set his affairs in order - renew the enchantments, revoke or switch the Fidelius Charm, absolutely forbid them from turning the school's fate over to the governors, give Harry some last advice. He could, that is, if Snape had instead chosen to break the barrier and let the Order through. That's what the Order of the Phoenix is. There are things worth dying for.
Snape is loyal to no one. He walks the line when he can, and does as Dumbledore and Voldemort say when he can get away with it. Dumbledore would never have thrown away Emmeline Vance's life for the sake of bolstering a cover, but Snape would to bolster his reputation. Likewise for showing Fudge the Dark Mark, a transgression Voldemort would never permit for the sake of a cover - if he ever found out. Summoning the Order so late and relating the prophecy (more on that below) were bold strokes for him, a huge prop for whatever side won, and the other side need never know. It was not out of any loyalty to Voldemort that Snape killed Dumbledore. It was to save his own hide. But it is no less repugnant for that.
All told, if Dumbledore was indeed asking for death, I have sworn to buy sixteen copies of Dune (double-double quadruple to the power of Yueh.) If that money ever sees the light of day, I shall be most surprised and, almost certainly, even more disappointed.)
25. Dumbledore gave Snape the DADA position because he knew Snape would be leaving Hogwarts at the end of the school year. False
(It was to get Slughorn to the school. In my book, the real question is why Snape didn't get it immediately after Educational Decree Number Twenty-Two.)
26. Dumbledore will communicate with Harry through his portrait in the Headmaster's office. Hedging my bets
(I think Voldemort will take over the school at some point. The groundwork has been laid since Book One, and the resulting scenes play really well in my head. The portrait is one of the things that really gets me about the scenario; I have no idea whether it'll survive long enough to talk to Harry. For the purposes of the quiz, it's false.)
27. Dumbledore will communicate with Harry through the Pensieve. Hedging my bets
(For the purposes of the quiz, it's false.)
28. Harry will use the Sorcerer's Stone. False
(It's been destroyed and all.)
29. Harry will return to the Chamber of Secrets. False
(Been there, done that.)
30. Harry will be a Prisoner of Azkaban (or at least go there). True
(To talk to Mundungus, who sold the locket to the same person he sold Sirius's half of the mirror.)
31. Harry will use the Goblet of Fire. False
(Just why?)
32. Harry will join the Order of the Phoenix. Hedging my bets
(Depending on the exact terms of the Fidelius Charm, he may not be able to. He will if he can. For the purposes of the quiz, it's true.)
33. Harry will (intentionally) join forces with the Half-Blood Prince. False
(Ugh, just see above.)
34. Harry will visit a place called the Deathly Hallows. False
(The translations call them relics.)
35. One of the Dursleys will learn to do magic. False
(I would say Petunia, but she shut that one down for, IMHO, no real reason.)
36. Petunia will (intentionally) give Harry vital information before he leaves Privet Drive. True
(She's hiding something, and it had better pop out in the final book.)
37. Ron and Hermione will be a couple. True
38. Harry and Hermione will be a couple. False
39. Harry and Ginny will get back together. True
40. Ron and Hermione have already kissed "off-screen" by the end of Half-Blood Prince. True
(Not that I especially care.)
41. Sibyll Trelawney will make another real prophecy. False
(But even if Hogwarts remains open, she'll be tossed out in the cold thanks to McGonagall's anti-Divination sentiments, and Voldemort will attempt to do with her what he did to Bertha Jorkins. Given that she remembers a brief, inconsequential sick spell some seventeen years after the fact, he may well succeed.
Oh, yes. More on that later.)
42. Rufus Scrimgeour will be Minister of Magic at the end of Deathly Hallows. False
(I like to think they'll have someone competent by the epilogue. He's not so politically offensive as to get booted during the course of the year, but...)
43. Harry will use the Mirror of Erised again. True
(JKR said it was a strong possibility.)
44. Harry will use the sword of Godric Gryffindor again. True
(It's hard to see through the utter acid trip that is the UK cover, but I think that's the Sword of Gryffindor.)
45. Harry will use the Sorting Hat. False
(What for?)
46. Harry will use a Time-Turner. False
(They were all destroyed. Good thing, too.)
47. Harry will use the two-way mirror that Sirius gave him. True
See the Azkaban bit.
48. Harry's knowledge of Muggle artifacts will save him from imminent danger. False
(Doesn't seem to be an issue.)
49. Grawp will (intentionally) save Harry/Ron/Hermione from danger. True
(Much as I'll hate to see him again.)
50. The Weasleys' - now wild - flying Ford Anglia will play a significant role in saving and/or transporting Harry/Ron/Hermione. True
(I think the UHPFC - yeah, I'm dating myself - said we'd see it again, and this is the last chance.)
51. Aside from James, Lily, Harry, and Voldemort, there was at least one other person present at the Potters' house the night James and Lily died. Hedging my bets
(For the purposes of the quiz, it's false.)
52. Bill Weasley will become a full werewolf. False
53. How did James and Lily Potter acquire their small fortune? (fill in the blank) James inherited it, for the most part
54. Snape is an Animagus. False
(We've got quite enough of those already, thank you. Plus, it'd make it more likely that he'd suspect MWPP.)
55. We will learn more about the relationship between Lily and Snape. True
(I just think there's more. But his love of her, if that's what'll be revealed, isn't the driving force of his entire life. Honest injun.)
56. A current member of the Order of the Phoenix will betray Harry. False
(But McGonagall may have been Imperiused or Polyjuiced during the Battle of Hogwarts. She gives me some pretty nasty vibes at the end of HBP.)
{57. The Death Eaters will attack Privet Drive.
58. The Death Eaters will attack The Burrow.
59. The Death Eaters will attack during Bill and Fleur's wedding. } Hedging my bets
(For the purposes of the quiz, it's false, true, true on pure gut instinct.)
60. The Death Eaters will attack Hogwarts. True
(Or just take over.)
61. The Death Eaters will attack Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. Hedging my bets
(For the purposes of the quiz, it's true.)
62. Draco will abandon the Death Eaters. Severely hedging my bets
(I've analyzed Draco to death and I still have no idea where he's headed. He has strong compulsions towards and away from every direction. The whole House unity thing makes me lean towards his going to the Order, but it's a very slight lean. Regardless, where he goes, Snape will follow as best he can, as he has a vested interest in his welfare.)
63. Peter Pettigrew, aka Wormtail, will abandon the Death Eaters. True
(Or betray them, anyway. You can't tell me that Gollum speech wasn't going somewhere.)
64. Snape will be openly allowed back into the Order of the Phoenix. False
(What, you think?)
65. Snape is truly loyal to:
(a) Dumbledore
(b) Voldemort
(c) Neither
C
66. Dumbledore trusts Snape because:
(a) Snape made a heartfelt apology
(b) Snape made an Unbreakable Vow
(c) Snape passed crucial secret information to the Order about Voldemort/Death Eaters
(d) Dumbledore had no hard evidence, he just wanted to give Snape the benefit of the doubt
(e) None of these, but we'll find out in Deathly Hallows
(f) We'll never know
E
(Remember how Trelawney remembers that sick spell? She recalls it occuring before she witnesses Aberforth catching Snape at the act. He heard the whole thing, and arranged to tell only a fragment. It's the only explanation. Snape thought that whether or not the "powers the Dark Lord knows not" thing worked for infants, he'd be in good with the winning side. Dumbledore, meanwhile, saw it as the most bloodless way to end the conflict. This is the deepest part of the war. If not Lily and James, Frank and Alice, Dumbledore would be putting a death sentence to everyone at the Order's table. But the fact remains that he sentenced them to death. It does not help him sleep at night, and that is the meaning of the "hurt me instead" line.)
67. Snape began working as a double agent for the Order:
(a) Before the prophecy was made
(b) After the prophecy was made, but before James and Lily died
(c) The night James and Lily died
(d) After James and Lily died
B
68. Harry will use, or attempt to use, an Unforgivable Curse. False
69. Harry will use, or attempt to use, the Avada Kedavra Curse on Voldemort. False
70. Someone other than Harry will actually finish-off Voldemort, even though Harry will have done most of the work. (i.e. Darth tosses the Emperor, Gollum falls in with the ring.) False
71. The U.S. edition cover-art for Deathly Hallows, portrays the final showdown. True
(Stylistically. See the pretty metaphorical arena? The end of Book Six, Chapter Twenty-Three is the best thing ever, just so as you know.)
72. The U.S. edition cover-art for Deathly Hallows, portrays Harry and Voldemort reaching for a Horcrux. False
73. Harry will destroy at least one Horcrux by sending it through the Veil. False
74. The Deathly Hallows is: (a) at Hogwarts
(b) in Godric's Hollow
(c) a graveyard
(d) beyond the Veil
(e) another name for Horcruxes
(f) none of these, but depicted on the US cover
Not B, C or D
(B seems to result from a basic misunderstanding, C isn't relics, and you can't come back from the dead.)
75. The final showdown will be at:
(a) the Deathly Hallows
(b) Hogwarts
(c) Azkaban
(d) Veil/Minitry of Magic
(e) Godric's Hollow
(f) The Underground Lake/Gringotts
(g) somewhere else
B
76. Harry will survive. False
(It was true until JKR said his story comes to a pretty clear end and that she howled in one of the last chapters. Now I'm getting my hopes down and fast.)
{77. Ron will survive.
78. Hermione will survive.
79. Ginny will survive.
80. Neville will survive.
81. Luna will survive.}Hedging my bets
(For the purposes of the quiz, it's false, true, true, false, true more or less at random. I really hope Neville doesn't die.)
82. Hagrid will survive. False
(He'll go after Snape fairly early on, with predictable results.)
83. Lupin will survive. True
(That's what he does. He survives.)
84. Tonks will survive. True
(No point killing her, really.)
85. Molly and Arthur will survive. False
(I don't think both of them die, though.)
86. Fred and George will survive. True
87. Bill and Fleur will survive. True
88. Percy will survive. True
89. Voldemort will survive. False
(Though giving him one of those worse fates than death does appeal to me.)
90. Snape will survive. False
(Even if I'm completely wrong about him, he's screwed.)
91. Peter Pettigrew will survive. False
(I really like After the Rain's take on Pettigrew betraying the Death Eaters and surviving, but it doesn't seem JKR's style.)
92. Bellatrix will survive. False
(God, I hope not.)
93. Lucius Malfoy will survive. True
(He'll take the easy way out somehow. He always has.)
94. Narcissa Malfoy will survive. False
(Specifically, she'll drown. It looks foreshadowed to me.)
95. Draco Malfoy will survive. Hedging my bets
(If I don't know what he'll do, how am I expected to know if he'll live through it? Thanks to Snape's inevitable intervention, he's not as deep in the doghouse with Voldemort as you might think, but he'd obviously not take abandonment kindly, but... eh, I'll spare you. No idea, but for the purposes of the quiz, it's true.)
96. Harry will become an Auror. False
(The less he sees of the Ministry, the happier he'll be. Now he realizes that.)
{97. Harry will become a professor at Hogwarts.
98. Ron will become a professor at Hogwarts.
99. Hermione will become a professor at Hogwarts.} False
(JKR said no long ago.)
100. Neville will become a professor at Hogwarts. True
(Though I suppose it could be Ginny.)
101. The final word of Deathly Hallows will be "scar." False
(Freebie!)
Other theories:
Harry accidentally set Kreacher loose by saying "get out of it".
Whatever is freaking them out on the British cover is off-panel.
That thing on Harry's back may or may not be Dobby or Winky, but it's certainly not Kreacher.
They'll visit Romania.
The goblins will turn to Voldemort. And don't forget they control Gringotts...
Regulus heard about the Locket from Bellatrix, but he learned about Voldemort's Horcruxes when he desperately asked his old favorite teacher for whatever help he could offer.
Snape killed Neville's grandfather. I don't have enough to go on as to motive, but it seems to fit together as an explanation for the boggart.
Horcruxes can be made at any time after the murder. The soul may heal, but the torn piece does not reattach. Otherwise, Dumbledore would not say Hepzibah Smith was his first murder since the Riddles.
Gah, I think I'm forgetting something, but this'll have to do.
