Feb 25, 2010 17:28

After some break my next chunk of cartoons from the newspaper Sekmadienis. This time year 1937:

The year 1937 saw significantly less cartoons related to the international relations. For me the reason of this is unclear.  And more cartoons were devoted to the internal politics.

January 27: Klaipėda area directory decided to award prizes worth 300 thousand LTL (quite impressive amount of money for the period) to the activists of Neumann - Sass organizations. "Lithuanian premiums for anti-Lithuanian activity"):

February 3: allusion that for some newspapers war in Spain became profitable attraction. "Continuing profitable Spanish tango":

February 28: major European countries made the decision do not intervene to the Spanish affairs. Journalists: "We are more lucky we can intervene into Spanish affairs":

April 11: Rumors that Germany and USSR may try to find modus vivendi and reaction in Poland. "Dupe lover: you promised to love me and now you are promising to love another dupe ":

April 25: Reaction to the visit to Kaunas and Warsaw of British deputy foreign affairs minister Plymouth and attempt to ease the relations between countries: "Matchmaking is difficult when bridegroom has bastard children":

May 9:  The year 1937 changed the history of Lithuania - Lithuanian national team became for the first time European champions :)) And this country became the basketball country. And still is :))

June 6:  what a mentality of the society was and how it differs from the modern mentality. The mayors of Kaunas and Šiauliai proposed to sterilize heavy drinkers to deal with the alcoholism problem. Their proposal got wide popular support...
Heavy drinker: "It's unfair gentleman:  I am paying taxes that are living from and you want to cut the part of me " :)))

June 27: reaction to the proposal to introduce bachelor tax (tax for unmarried men) and to use the additional money for the support of widows,   foundlings and large families. The bachelor: "What an unfair world: I don't gave birth to them but I need to suckle them":

July 4: some reaction to the international events. Cartoon called "Modern European highway":

July 11: reaction to the Polish-Romanian initiative to  organize Baltic - Black sea axis. Lithuanian reaction (not wise of course): "It is vain attempt to join parts while connector is broken":

July 18:  again some anti-Polish sentiments. Recently the Gipsy king of Poland has been inaugurated. "Professional solidarity: Gipsy king says: "I acknowledge that your spoil is better". Polish official has horses with the notes "Vilnius" "Ukraine" , "Belarus"

August 1: Angry reaction to the series of papers of Italian journalist Volto in the Gazzetta del popolo.  Those papers had clearly expressed anti-Lithuanian bias. Lithuanian cartoonist see the intrigues of Polish government: "What a boss such a dog":

August 8: Polish press accused Lithuania of giving shelter to the Ukrainian activist Yevhen Konovalec who has been accused of terrorism. (In fact Lithuania granted him citizenship but he never lived in the country). Cartoon called "Drunk hallucinations":

September 19: reaction to the incident on the Polish - Lithuanian border. At this time Lithuania accused Poland of illegal detention of border guard officer. Similar incidents occurred between Japanese and Chinese. Cartoon called  "Brothers in soul".  Japanese to the Pole : "Hi brother , you are truly Asian":

October 31: British and french compliance to the Italy resulted in a complete Italian disregard.  "Bootblacks" London and Paris ; "What a shoes. It's impossible to clean them using all possible creams":

November 14: irony to the British - German relations using allusion to the famous fairy-tale.
London granddaughter: Grandma, why do you need so big ears?
Berlin grandmother: To hear better your sweet words about colonies, darling.
London granddaughter: Grandma, why do you need so big mouth ?
Berlin grandmother: To engulf you easier with all your colonies , darling.
