I read about a study that theorized that hoarding really is a gene, and it affects the way your brain processes and recalls memories. Everything they talked about applied to my family... I am *very* much with you on the Garage Sale Problem.
For me, at least so far, the trick seems to be keeping aware of the fact that I'm predisposed to hoarding and doing what I can to prevent myself from acquiring Things. Books, however, are my weakness...
Heh heh. I actually had an interesting conversation about that with my aunt and cousin while I was staying with them. We concluded that the genetics are definitely from Dad's side. You see, Grandpa gets things because they're cheap, and Grandma keeps things because she might need them later.
Grandpa: I got three dozen water woozles at the grocery store today. Grandma: What? What are those? Why did you get them? Grandpa: Oh, I'm not sure. But they were only a dime a-piece. Grandma: Ah. Well, I'm sure we can use them for something.
So Grandpa picks up the random junk, and Grandma can't stand to throw it away. These two traits are extremely dangerous when combined in the same household, much less the same person. I have both of these traits.
I've got the same hobby. These days I can manage it aggressively in the real world but tend to hoard links and images online. I've got more than 3,000 bookmarks, which of course I never get around to sorting...
Heh. My bookmarks are their own little monster of a folder.
It did. I eventually got all my stuff together. I took a bunch of it home, too, so next year I won't have to worry about as much... Okay, I will, but it will be new junk, instead of new junk plus the old junk.
