There are 4 different types of DVD media. DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW. Now, some of those may be dual-sided and/or dual-layered too.
For my DVD burning, I use single-sided and single-layered DVD+R (my burner prefers them over DVD-R). I compress with DVD Shrink and then burn the file with Nero. I've had issues with a few disks, but I think it's due to the copyright protection and maybe the software isn't keeping up with the changes in the technology. I also used to have a program called DVD43. It had a little smiley face down in the taskbar by the clock and if I put a DVD in my computer, it would turn red, yellow, or green depending on the level of encryption.
