I feel old. So old. I'm in one of those sentimental, "I wanna be 12 again" moods and I swear the thing that brings me back most is MUSIC. Music has been so important for me that just a list of songs from 1993 cause everything to flood back.
I really think music was a lot better 10 years ago, to be honest. And I'm not just saying that in a nostalgic way. There was so much variety then! You've got R&B (Xscape), pop (Ace of Base), dance (Haddaway), alternative (RHCP), reggae (Inner Circle), rap (Tag Team), etc. all in the top 10! And on that list you've got a great variety of all the popular acts, too - Madonna, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, Meat Loaf, 2Pac. Have you SEEN the charts lately? I'll show you:
The Billboard Hot 100TM
Top 50 Positions /Issue Date: November 1, 2003
1 1 12 Baby Boy, Beyonce Featuring Sean Paul
2 4 9 Stand Up, Ludacris Featuring Shawnna
3 2 27 Get Low, Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz Featuring Ying Yang Twins
4 5 13 Damn!, YoungBloodZ Featuring Lil Jon
5 3 19 Shake Ya Tailfeather, Nelly, P. Diddy & Murphy Lee
6 6 10 Here Without You, 3 Doors Down
7 9 7 Holidae In, Chingy Featuring Ludacris & Snoop Dogg
8 7 25 Right Thurr, Chingy
9 10 10 Rain On Me, Ashanti
10 8 15 Why Don't You & I, Santana Featuring Alex Band Or Chad Kroeger
It's ATROCIOUS! 8/10 songs are rap. EIGHT OF TEN! Even the would be R&B songs like Beyonce require featured rappers these days. Now I like some rap but 8/10 is ridiculous and that has been VERY typical the past 2 years. 3 weeks ago the ENTIRE top ten was rap. Plus who the fuck has heard YoungBloodz or Lil Jon?! I listen to top 40 radio very frequently and I haven't heard either artist, nor have I heard this new Ludacris song, nor the Ashanti song. And very established artists like Madonna, Dido, Christina, and Coldplay have BOMBED on the singles chart (despite selling tons or albums, thus proving they are still very popular).
Whatever. Music today sucks. If you don't have the Neptunes and a guest rapper on your record (or you aren't an established rock act who gets EXTREMELY overplayed and overplayed and overplayed at the rock stations) you cannot make an impact. And thus so many artists are getting fucked on radio and having trouble selling albums because of it. Also why music these days is nearly 99% American when back in the 80's and 90's we'd get great acts from around the world.
But yea. Again. Music today sucks so much. Someone get me a I time machine, I miss 1993 :-(
