The Harris Quest 500 is not a good transmitter.

Same holds true for the newer Harris FM rigs which are built around a lot of the same construction techniques.

We figured out why the @#(%*!!! Quests toast their synthesizer boards if the transmitter is left powered but turned off... the synthesizer is still powered and putting out its 20mW or so... which is being amplified by the exciter board to 8 watts.

That's right, an 8 watt amplifier, contained within a shielded enclosure with no cooling.

Hey, at least this is a little better than Harris's "HD"TV rigs, which go spare if the room temperature exceeds 68F...
