In case you really didn't want to work today, I offer you
this:
- Last night, a super-rare (as in, one of nine such cars in all of North America) Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R got stolen in Calgary from a dealership by an amatuer auto thief using false ID; the dealership then posted information about the car on a local car enthusiast forum.
- A forum member spoted the car driving along a local highway, and took high-resolution shots of the thief behind the wheel.
- As people from other automotive forums across the Interwebs joined in, forums members used Facebook to track down the thief, locate his house, and post up directions to the place using Google maps.
- Police were informed of thief's true identity, while a dozen car buffs from various forums showed up at the thief's house and spent the night waiting for him to come home.
The story is still developing, but as I type this, the folks from the forum have now formed possees, and are driving around Calgary to locate the vehicle, with a particular focus on the house of the thief's girlfriend as well as his place of employment.
And in case that's not enough Win for you, this is the same forum that six month ago tracked down a hit-and-run driver in much the same fashion.
