NPR tidbits (gene kelly, mohawk guy), other spacey stuff

So it's been in my queue to post for ages, but this morning M sent me We're NASA And We Know It, a cute rap video involving breakdancing and people impersonating folk from the video most of geekdom followed of the Curisoity landing.

When I'd seen it I'd gotten at least some of the references on account of seeing stuff on FB and such, but figured I'd have gotten more of it had I been able to actually watch the Curiosity Landing - eyes.nasa.gov was not my friend that night, and I'd not known I could have just gone over to NASA TV (and on the real TV, too, down at Dad's.

So yesterday, Fred had sent a link I've not yet watched, High Def enhanced Curiosity Landing Video, which I think I shall try to find some time to watch. I now realize (which I didn't realize this morning) that I am unlikely to get to know any more about the control room people from whatever that video is.

That said, a couple weeks ago Mohawk and Elvis guys (Ferdowsi & Steltzner) were on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Not My Job. It's better to listen to than to read the transcript. But I got a gem out of the comments to the transcript, and almost just sent an email to dglennfor QOTD: BTW, I'm not saying that Ferdowsi isn't a bright, smart young kid who seems really nice. I'm just surprised that most Americans have so little experience with science nerds that they still think we're all a bunch of white males in boring ties like in "Apollo 13." Let's face it, once you can conceive of lowering a one-ton roving chemical laboratory onto another planet with a rocket-powered jetpack connected to a crane, your brain is already a couple bubbles off plumb. Iconoclastic hair is just not a stretch at that point. :-)

Most people really need to get out and meet more geeks if mid-century stereotypes from mainstream movies are what they think we really are ...-Janiscortese, Sunday, August 12, 2012 4:15:12 PM
In other news, I did not know before this morning that Gene Kelly had a 103 fever when he filmed that dance scene in Singing in the Rain. Here's Susan Stanberg's story from this morning, and there's 6 min of video from Gone About the Gal.

In still other news, if your motorcycle chase scene goes on long enough that there's time to suddenly realize the umbrella is in the restaurant, UR Doing It Wrong. I enjoyed Bourne Legacy more than BadM did, but it did have Issues. Well, in retrospect, Subscriptions. Do I remember correctly that in the first movie Bourne cuts the gal's hair and dyes it a different color? I have it, but on VHS.

Speaking of movies, I want to watch Singing in the Rain, now.
