A snippet of Eli' and Weston's youth.
It was an ordinary afternoon at Starlight Shores, sun was shining, birds were singing, people were either rushing home from work or to the beach. Parks were filled with people enjoying the sun and paparazzi’s were spying on celebrities hoping for juicy gossip.
At the tree house, on the backyard of a quite fancy house, two young guys were sitting, laughing and talking. “Well, its Friday, bro. What are we going to do?” Eli asked from Weston and took a sip from his beer, the ones they had managed to buy from store. Weston shrugged. “I don’t know, is your dad in town?” He continued and looked at Eli. “Nah, he’s away in some conference.” Eli answered and laughed a bit bitterly. Weston nodded for an answer that was always good. Eli’s dad, Doctor Ainsworth was a rigid man and usually didn’t let Eli go anywhere. He wanted Eli to be a doctor too, he didn’t know anything of those hours they’d spent on the tree house talking how they’d be famous one day. Famous film stars.
Weston though that it was a bit sad, he had a good relationship with his parents and they supported him at everything. Eli had things a bit differently. “I think I heard someone mentioning a party at Jessie’s house tonight?” he said and stretched his back on the floor, stared the holes at the ceiling. Eli looked sharply at him. “Party? Dude what are we waiting for then, let’s get ready. I’ll meet you at your house at ten.” Eli said took a big gulp from his beer, tossed one to Weston too. “Cheers” Eli said raising his can. “Let us be lucky tonight.”
Eli stood by the mirror, thinking what to wear. “Eli! Eliass…” a voice from downstairs called him. Eli grunted. Eliza, his big sister. “I’m upstairs stupid.” he yelled back and continued his clothing problem. Eliza rushed the stairs and peeked in his room. “Hey, are you going somewhere? Mom said no parties…” Eliza smiled mischievously. “Go away.” Eli grunted. “Aaawww…” Eliza said and her eyes widened. “Are you going on a date with Weston? All dressed up?” she teased. Eli turned, pushed her out of his room and slammed the door shut. “Mind you own business sis, go and kiss your dream date, Karl or whatever that dude’s name was.” Eli said angrily.
After an hour he was ready. He checked that the hall was empty; Eliza was gone with her date that dude from local store. Mom was somewhere and dad was safely a long way from him. Still he moved quietly, grabbed his coat just in case it’d rain and sneaked out. He hopped over the backyard fence and leaned on the wall near Weston’s front door.
Soon he heard noises from inside. “Have fun!” Weston’s mom said, obviously to Weston. Eli liked Weston’s mom, she was always nice, sometimes too nice, Weston’s dad was a bit more serious but he was ok too. At least they understood Weston unlike his parents that cared only about their careers. “Bye” Weston’s voice interrupted his thoughts. He slide the rail down and smiled to Eli. “Ready?” he asked. Eli smiled back and nodded.
While they walked to Jessie’s house, they drank the last two beers Eli had taken from tree house. They chatted and laughed and enjoyed their freedom. “Don’t get in any troubles okay?” Weston said then and glanced Eli. “I’ll try my best bro.” Eli said back and dropped his beer can to the street and kicked it. Weston nodded. Then they were already on Jessie’s house, they could hear the music and laughs and happy chatting from inside.
It was already over midnight, Eli noticed from the living rooms wall clock. He was a bit tipsy from the punch he’d been drinking and Weston was somewhere talking to someone, Eli didn’t know him. Eli licked his lips, maybe another cup of punch? He stood up and wobbled to the kitchen. ”EEELIIIIIII!!!” a voice yelled and something rushed into his arms, kissed him on the cheek. Eli pushed her away. “Cherry…” he sighed to the girl that looked him dizzily. “Go away.” Eli grunted and turned to take punch.
“You don’t love me? Why?” Cherry asked loudly and started to cry. Eli sighed. Always, always she made a scene. Cherry was annoying.
Before Eli could think any further someone turned him over and pushed him. “Why you so cruel to that sweet girl?” some dude asked. He was way taller than Eli and probably some football player with brains as big as his shoe size. “It doesn’t concern you, go away.” Eli said and tried to pass the guy.
“No one hurts women when I’m around.” the guy yelled and grabbed Eli’s t shirt, the punch splashed on his shirt and on Eli’s shirt and that made him angrier. People were coming to the kitchen to watch the fight. Eli shook his hand off his shirt. “I said that doesn’t concern you, so leave me alone.” he said again and tried again go pass the player. Dude grunted something and before Eli realized he was pushed to the wall, he hit his head on it and the dude lifted him up from his t shirt. “I said.” he hissed ”No one hurts women while I am around, not even little gay boys like you.”
Someone tapped the big guys shoulder. “Excuse me. ”Weston said and smiled to big guy. Excuse me, John, right? My buddy is drunk and he doesn’t know what he’s thinking or saying. He’s sorry and he’ll be calling Cherry tomorrow. I’ll take him home now.” Weston said to John who just looked at him amazed. Weston grabbed Eli’s arm. ”Run.” he whispered and looked still at John. “So, no hard feelings right?” Weston said and backed to the door.” I bet Cherry wants to thank you, so why don’t you give her a drink and go talk to her? Okay, big boy?” John seemed to be thinking his words, forgot Eli and smiled very stupidly.
They ran, out of the door, into street and all the way to the tree house. Eli sat on the floor, leaned his back on the wall and gasped. “Thanks.” he said to Weston lying on the floor gasping. “I said no to get into trouble.” Weston said and looked at Eli. “How do you always get people to attack you?” he continued. “Well, I dunno. You could have left me there though; I would have handled it myself.” Eli grunted back. “Yeah right.” Weston laughed. “And watch that big tractor to beat up my best bro? “He said and looked smiling at Eli. “Never” he smiled.
Eli turned over and took something from the smudgy box. “Seckret Club” said the wobbly letters on its cover. Their club house box. Eli took something from it. “I got these from Eliza’s boyfriend. We could try and relax.” he said and lit up the smokes. He lay besides Weston and they were silent staring the stars from the hole on the ceiling, listening to the car noises from the street. Eli felt his muscle to relax and his head was getting dizzy.
He looked at Weston, who seemed so calm. “Wes.” he said and turned on his side to face Weston. “Thank you for being always there for me, for taking care of me, being my best friend.” Eli said and it sounded so sincere, so straight from his heart and it gave a warm feeling to Weston’s heart. Eli didn’t talk about his feelings often. “Weston turned his head looked at Eli. “You’d done the same for me.” he smiled. Eli smiled back ”Maybe, but thank you anyway. ”he continued, brought his face near Weston’s. Weston could feel his breaths; see his eyes gleam a bit. “Wes?” Eli asked suddenly sounding insecure. “Can I kiss you?”
Weston was surprised, of course he knew that Eli liked guys, he did too, but he knew also that neither of them had kissed anyone yet. “Okay.” Weston heard himself say, his heart beating a bit too fast, his voice maybe being a little bit too squeaky. Eli raised himself up to his elbows, leaned down and pressed his lips on Weston’s. It was a soft kiss, nothing passionate, nothing more than a kiss. Eli swept his tongue along his lower lip and for a moment they got tangled in the kiss, tangled a bit in the feelings, then it was over.
Eli rolled on his back, let out a soft laughter. “Well, that was nice.” he chuckled. “But nothing special?” he continued sounding like asking something. Weston laughed a bit. “Yeah I guess, no tingling in my toes no butterflies in my stomach. “Weston said back and smiled to Eli, grabbing his hand in his.
Eli sighed and smiled. “I still love you tho.” he sighed to the ceiling. Weston smiled back. “Me too, Eli, me too.”
