Ouran Koukou Host Club by Hatori Bisco. This is just crack. It's like Hana Yori Dango meets Sailor Moon or someting. Ouran High School is an exclusive school for the Rich & Privileged. Haruhi Fujioka is neither rich nor privileged. Her parents are divorced and her father, whom she stays with, works as a cross-dressing bar 'hostess,' leaving Haruhi to fend for herself most of the time. Haruhi has therefore developed an independent, matter-of-fact approach to life. She takes it in stride when she manages to get a scholarship to attend Ouran Gakuen, but her composure is rather dented when she opens the door to a room she thought was the library and finds herself confronting a group of boys posed ostentatiously on a luxury set, welcoming her to 'The Host Club.'
Because Haruhi is dressed in a male uniform (it's cheaper), the boys initially dismiss her. Until, that is, she manages to accidentally break a vase worth 8 million yen as she backs out of the room. In order to pay her debt, Haruhi is forced to join the host club, which is just what it sounds. A club composed of the most good-looking and talented boys in school who provide attention--not to mention ahem aesthetic edification--to bored, spoiled, ojousama fangirls. They're also batshit crazy, by the way. The craziest is probably the President, Suo Tamaki, who takes a shine on Haruhi *see below* whom he initially thought was a boy. Tamaki is a gigantic dork, pure and simple, and the rest of the club routinely play him for all he's worth. He and Kyoya, the Vice-President, are a riot. They call each other "Daddy" and "Mommy" though Kyoya is probably only pandering to Tamaki's strange whims, anyhow. Kyoya is the real brains behind the host club. He's the one who keeps tabs on Haruhi's debt (I believe it has now ballooned to 5 billion yen) and generally manipulates everyone else around him. He's so evil.
My favorite will have to be the famous Hitachin twins, though. Since they're identical and practically inseparable, their best-selling gimmick is Brotherly (read: Screamingly Incestuous) Love. *see below* They grope each other whenever they have the chance--which is all the time--and make dramatic declarations of love, to the delight of their adoring fans. But if girls prefer something more erm nuanced, there's always the Master-SlaveServant Relationship between Honey-senpai--who is the oldest in the club but looks and speaks as if he's ten--and the enigmatic Mori-senpai who carries Honey around like a porcelain doll.
Like I said, the manga is high. Hatori Bisco's previous work was "Sennen no Yuki" (A Thousand Years of Snow) which was pretty uneven, not to mention notoriously inconclusive. I think she's hit her stride with Host Club. It's definitely parodic though there are other elements to it which doesn't make the manga that easy to categorize or pin down, unless you were to compare it to Ai Morinaga's works or... who's the author of that crazy cosplay manga again?
Ouran Koukou Host Club is published in LaLa magazine. I think there are 7 volumes of the manga out already in Japan. The manga has been licensed by Viz; Volume 5 is the latest release. Studio Bones is doing an anime, which will premiere in April 2006 XD
