I don't usually pay any attention to film reviews, but recently I've barely been able to resist them. I've been waiting for news of Bunraku, and in the meantime I've looked up just about everything anyone who's seen the film has to say about it. And I have to admit, some of the comments are starting to make me feel hesitant about seeing the film.
I know other peoples' opinions shouldn't affect mine, and for all I know, disliking Bunraku could be the new "cool" thing for reviewers to do, like hating prog rock was (and to an extent still is). Still, despite how determined I am to remain loyal to the film and wait patiently for it to be released, I can't help but feel slightly disheartened by all the negative reviews. They all talk about how the film has no substance to it, and how it's boring and too shallow. I'd love to find just one reviewer who enjoyed it, and maybe saw something in it that the others didn't. Knowing that it was all down to something that most people missed would make me feel so much better about this.
Still, I guess at the of the day I'll have to wait and see, at least until a proper trailer gets released (and no, I don't mean that short clip that was used to promote it during the Mumbai Film Festival). I do tend to like films that others dislike (eg. Gamer, Cool World, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Shock Treatment, Fern Gully, etc.), so maybe I'll enjoy Bunraku too. And at least what I've read of it so far seems fascinating, especially Killer #2. He sounds like a rather fun villain... I guess I'll be fine as long as the rest of the film is also fun!
