Summary: Ariel muses about what she has left behind, and what she has now.
Part of his world, this world. It was what Ariel had deeply wanted, even before that stormy night where she had saved Eric and fallen in love with him. She had wanted legs, to walk on land and explore all that she couldn't touch before. They were her greatest dream, her only real desire, and since back then she had no idea how to fulfill that desire she did what she could to be closest to it.
She collected fallen trinkets, whatchamacallits and thingermabobs, from statues to globes to glittery this and thats. They were all from that world, the world beyond the sea. Unfortunately, she had no idea how they worked and could only imagine what it was like to use these with her own two hands, hands and feet! A shiny thing with prongs and a handle, like a small piece of coral, that, well, could run through her hair. She could use it while walking, it was small enough to be portable. Though, she now knew it was called a fork and used to eat food with (Sometimes, she still found it strange...) Ariel still found her mind wandering back to the sea, back to when she used them in place of hair brushes (the watchamacallits that looked like an clam with fine spines on a stick).
Back under the sea was where she could explore and theorize with Flounder, and sometimes Sebastian. Well, only if he didn't realize he was talking about those strange human things, that is. Flounder, who though was a complete scaredy-fin, still adventured past Atlantis to find her beloved trinkets and Sebastian, who was torn between his fondness for the youngest Princess and his loyalty to the King, who always did his best to advise her. Back under the sea was where her father was, the man who loved her despite not understanding her, and her sisters, who she was as close as she could be, though they didn't always agree. In the sea she could sing with the whales, chariot race with the dolphins, and play about in the endless known wonder that Atlantis was.
Her thoughts didn't always stay back in the memories of her past, though. They couldn't, not really, as she hadn't always spent time in the sea even back then. At least ... not technically. She had snuck off as often as she could to see Scuttle, gaining his help and expertise (the same that she now knew to be not 100% correct) in identifying all the human items she had found. Thinking about the time she first spent above the surface always inevitably led her to think of Eric; the first time she had seen him, the first time she had felt him, the first time they had finally kissed. That particularl thought always snaps her back to the moment, where Eric is patiently smiling at her, somewhat amused and intrigued by where her mind has gone to and what she'll come up with next.
It's in these moments that she realizes she's part of right where she's supposed to be.
