So yesterday I was going around collecting boxes for packing since Becci and I are moving all our stuff down to Auburn this weekend. I went to Kroger and asked if they had ANY spare boxes laying around. (I asked this while staring at two empty boxes on the floor of the bakery). The lady was like, "Follow me." So I followed her to the back of the store where she disappeared behind a "Employees Only Please" sign for ten minutes. She came back and informed me that they didn't have any and I should go to the service desk to ask that the night crew save me their boxes for pick up in the morning. So I go to the service desk and said I was looking for boxes. As she wrote down a number to call on a post-it, she glared and said, "Well, here's the procedure for boxes: call this number tonight AT 10:00. Ask for a night manager to save boxes. They might save them for you as late as midnight. Rarely do they save them 'til the morning, but you might get them to keep them until 6:30am." "Ok, thanks," I said while walking away. That was wierd because the bakery lady seemed to know as fact that they would save them for me until I came in the next morning at 8. But apparently if you want boxes it's a black market operation. I probably shouldn't even post this, it might blow open their entire operation.
So I went to meijer thinking I could get lucky there. I stood at the service desk there for about two seconds before deciding not to risk it. I went straight to the bakery and asked if they had any spare boxes for me to take off their hands. (again staring at a pile of empty boxes). Then a miracle happened - she gave them to me. They were all folded down, but probably better that way, so I could fit them in my cart. From there I went to the meat counter and asked the same thing. The lady obliged and went to the back for two big boxes, then started emptying other boxes of meat product into their freezer displays so I could have more. And the seafood lady happened to be down there and offered me a bunch of boxes from her. I had to go empty my cart first into my car before returning for more treasured boxes. Most of the seafood ones were a little soggy, so I didn't take them. But I got two more HUGE ones from the meat lady. Oh yeah, Meijer is where its at for boxes. Then I had to manuever my way through the busy aisles with a cart full of boxes that I couldn't see over. I almost ran my cart into the back of an old lady standing still, because I couldn't see her around my boxes. But I didn't.
Moral of the story - Kroger bad, Meijer good ... for boxes.
Now I can fill my boxes with books and clothes and more books until my packing day is complete.
