“Congrats Mr. Nishimura.” Kaoru said teasingly.
Kyo smirked. “Well I couldn’t have done it without my wonderful partner.” Kyo teased back. They shared a laugh before standing back and admiring the view. It had been a few years since they both graduated from high school and then college. After college the two became business partners and have been establishing a series of night clubs around Tokyo. With Kaoru’s management skills and Kyo’s negotiation skills the two have been an unstoppable team.
“So how many clubs does this make now?”
“Who cares?” Kyo answered earning a friendly punch on the arm from Kaoru.
“You care.” Kaoru said taking a sip of his alcoholic drink.
“Whatever.” Kyo mumbled. Kyo looked around the room as Kaoru turned back to the bar to flirt with the bartender. Usually Kyo would notice Kaoru’s flirting and say something to embarrass his friend but something had caught Kyo’s eye and made his jar drop.
“Well, the bartender said she was going to sue me for sexual harassment so…” Kaoru started saying as he turned towards Kyo but stopped when he noticed that the other man was not paying attention to him. “Kyo?” Kaoru blinked and waved a hand in front of his friend’s face. Noticing that Kyo was staring at something in the distance he asked, “What are you…?” But Kaoru couldn’t finish his sentence because standing right across from them was her. She was standing in the middle of the room next to her husband and was chatting with a group of people. It should not have been a surprise that she was here, after all her husband was an important business financial investor. It was only normal that he, like so many others, would want to get in on Kaoru and Kyo’s business.
“Nabiki.” Kyo whispered. She was still as beautiful as ever to Kyo. Nabiki must have sensed that someone was watching her because she looked over in the direction where the two men were standing. Nabiki whispered something to her husband before walking towards the bar.
“Well,” Kaoru started. “I’m going to go try my luck with that lovely lady over there,” Kaoru said. Kaoru knew when he was in the way so he walked away from the bar leaving Kyo behind.
Kyo got over his state of shock and leaned against the bar stand. He had his cool nonchalant look on his face causing Nabiki to smirk at the usual pretending-not-to-care look. She walked straight to the bar and ordered herself something to drink.
After receiving her drink she turned towards Kyo. “I did not know that you were going to be here, Kyo,” she said.
Kyo smirked. “You knew I would be here. This is my party.”
“Is it now?” She teased. “I thought it was the party of a powerful club owner, not a high school drop out.” She raised an eyebrow at Kyo.
“I didn’t drop out,” Kyo mumbled. Nabiki took a sip of her drink not really paying attention to what the man next to her was saying. “You are still with that man,” Kyo noted.
“You mean my husband,” The way she said the word ‘husband’ felt like a sharp prick to Kyo’s heart, almost as if she was trying to be mean towards him.
“I guess we have something else in common,” Kyo said, “besides lust,” he added.
Nabiki looked at him curiously. “And what would that be?” She asked.
“We are both married,” Kyo answered as he turned to look at her. Nabiki’s attention turned from her drink to the man beside her. She studied him with her dark eyes. Kyo knew that all of his past emotions could be seen in his eyes, and he did not care. Inside he secretly hoped that she saw the pain that she caused him.
“You forgot something else,” She said without taking her eyes off of him.
“What is that?” Kyo asked.
“Neither of us loves who we are married to,” She said. At that Kyo turned his head and stared out at the crown of people who had gathered to celebrate his success.
Kyo continued to stare at the crowd as neither person said a word. The stayed in that silence for a while until Nabiki moved. Out of the corner of his eye Kyo noticed the older, beautiful woman take one last sip of her drink before gathering herself and walking back out into the crowd. Kyo looked over at the half full glass of alcohol sitting on the table. The glass was stained with some of her lipstick from where she had taken a few sips from. Kyo carefully picked up the glass, brought the lipstick side to his mouth and took a sip before setting it back down and leaving the bar.
