Well, before the news of my neighbor Alma’s passing, my weekend this past weekend was really nice.
I spent the day Saturday on a motorcycle ride with my VROC friends. Our fellow rider and dear friend, Chuck Burt, was killed last July. We had a commemorative brick laid in Luckenbach last September. To remember him on the anniversary of his passing, we all got together to meet for breakfast then ride to the brick.
I left my house at 6:30 in the morning, expecting to make the ride to the Hill Country Cupboard restaurant in Johnson City alone. I stopped for gas to find several of my friends there at the gas station. So…I ended up making the ride with everyone after all.
We had a very nice breakfast. I think we were all shocked at just how many of us were there. The turnout was much higher than I’d imagined it would be. The funniest part was that my friend Mark seemingly always gets poor service, and seems to always be the last person to get his food. This happened again. Everyone was eating and Mark was still waiting on his food. Helen jokingly took this picture.
We made the ride to Luckenbach as one big group. The plan was for Mark and me to crush our boutonnieres on the brick. Mark and I were pallbearers at Chuck’s funeral. I initially placed my boutonniere on the brick.
Mark placed his on it as well.
Chuck was known for wearing a Stetson (a cowboy hat). No matter where we went, he had that cowboy hat with him. A graphic of the hat is on the brick. As a tribute, Chico wore a cowboy hat in Chuck's honor. We placed it near the brick.
With everyone present, we crushed the boutonnieres on his brick.
Perhaps the most interesting and fascinatingly remarkable thing was the fact that while the area around the brick was generally shaded by the trees, the sun shone brightly on the very spot where Chuck’s brick is. It was a rather extraordinary thing to see, and we all watched in awe.
On Sunday, Blade wanted to spend the day together and make a drive together to San Antonio. We don’t often have the opportunity to spend a whole day together, so I gladly accepted. It was a very fun day. Unfortunately, during the day I’d gotten word of Alma’s passing.
So, it was really a nice weekend. Just wanted to share that.
Anyway…until next time…
