It's Raining Cats!

Dom is not the only one who finds herself playing cat rescue these days. I have what is quite possibly the luckiest cat in the world lounging on my washing machine.

There is a stray cat at work that I have been slowly working on befriending. I have a cat carrier under my desk and a ziploc bag of cat food. One of my coworkers went and bought a bag of cat food this weekend for the stray and another woman at work also brings cat food in. It's a young, really beautiful tabby that's very, very skittish. I've been able to touch him twice.

The cat on my washing machine is not that that cat. This is a 6 month old boy, black and white and intact. Let me tell you a story of this amazingly lucky little kitty...

This morning when I finally got to work (what is it about the rain that makes people forget how to drive?) this woman who works in the program and keeps her eye on the stray came to find me. Apparently when one of our employees arrived today, there was a hitchhiker. This woman lives in South Baltimore, work is in Northwest Baltimore. She gets a ride from a friend, who lives somewhere in Baltimore. This kitten rode in the spare tire under the truck's undercarriage for God knows how many miles. When the truck stopped to drop her off, the kitten bolted, tried to come in the door and was shooed into the bushes.

I went out there, called and he came running up to me, shivering and purring. He spent the entire day in the carrier under my desk. When he was awake, he was quiet unless I left. Once I walked out of my office, he would start calling. As long as I was sitting in there with him he was fine.

I considered taking him to the SPCA, but I know just how many homeless cats there are out there. So instead, I took him to the vet to get his shots, a checkup and the FIV and FeLV tests. He has a clean bill of health and I have a friend from work almost convinced that she really needs a kitten. If she can't take him, I figure I'll just spread his cuteness all over FB until someone from my f-list caves. :)

I would have pictures, but both battery packs for my camera are dead, so I can't load the few that I have. I have checked both craigslist and the Baltimore Sun, no lost kitty ads. He had on a flea collar that was way too tight and he had fleas, but they're pretty much taken care of now with the Capstar and Revolution combo.
