I have this awful tendency to post a short story on Fictionpress, only to take it down 12 hours later because I'm not satisfied with the way it came out. Then I either decide to trash it or turn it into a full length novel (which, by the way, never gets completed).
It happened again today, except the story was already 12000 words.
Do most writers sit in front of their computers and write all day? I managed to squeeze out about an hour or two every day for the past few weeks, and only because it's winter break. I admire anyone who is able to do this and still complete a coherent novel.
Now I'm debating if I should join a bunch of writing communities and seek some friendly peer advice, but that has not gone well in the past. Why are young writers so snarky and belligerent? I'm almost afraid to post anything on writing communities. I once made a harmless comment about how 'multicultural stories' should be it's own genre, simply because I was relating to someone who said they liked to write about other cultures and couldn't find a separate subforum for it. Then some random person responded that I was promoting segregation by suggesting these stories be isolated in bookstores, and technically, 'multicultural stories' meant stories on multiple cultures. I don't think I ever made another post on any writing community after that.
It's also hard to post anything I write, with the whole cult of show-and-not-tell nowadays. Unfortunately, my stories are always set during some obscure time in history that no one particularly cares about. I'm not desperate for feedback--I just want to write something worth my time. My standards aren't high. I'd be happy if I could write something I loved, and one other person in the world read it, understand it, get something out of it, and maybe enjoy it.
As I sit here working at the front desk of a doctor's office, writing one sentence or a few words whenever I find a minute of free time... it's that incoherence again, even in my LJ entries. According to the time stamp, I started this entry at 4:48. It is now 5:30. How do people do this? :)
