01. Ring
Noa’s fingers gently brushed the cool metal of the Millennium Ring and Bakura started, jumping backwards with a snarl of, “Don’t touch that!”
02. Hero
“I don’t need you to be some kind of hero for me,” Noa muttered stiffly, glaring at Bakura with firm resolve in his eyes.
03. Memory
Noa was nodding the entire time he spoke and interrupted before Bakura could finish “- and we’ve both got our own past lives to keep in mind.”
04. Box
Noa was screaming at him, and he really didn’t think it fair, all things considered, but the boy was demanding and knowing was such a big deal to him that Bakura could almost forgive his audacious words, “Do you plan on hiding things away in there forever?!”
05. Run
Bakura slid a hand around the back of Noa’s head, pulling his face in close as he quietly whispered, “Are you going to run away?”
06. Hurricane
The weather and especially the rain, Noa thought, were uncontrollable, all-encompassing and hardly predictable - rather like Bakura, in a way.
07. Wings
“… If you were interested,” Noa was purposefully being slow and painfully casual, sounding shy about this suggestion and refusing to look at Bakura while he vocalized it, “I could create wings for you here, and you could fly like the animal they said you were.”
08. Cold
Noa shivered and rubbed his arms but he looked glad in any case; when Bakura cast him a confused glance he offered a simple explanation: “I’d forgotten what real cold feels like.”
09. Red
Noa had once, in the dead of night, stolen into the room Bakura had claimed as his own and snuck out with a handful of red cocktail swords; the next day, he’d made a point of bragging about having pilfered from the ‘great Thief King’, and Bakura neglected to inform Noa that he’d known of his presence all along.
10. Drink
Noa wasn’t old enough to drink but he downed the shot without hesitation and Bakura barked laughter when tears streamed from his eyes as he coughed from its strength.
11. Midnight
They finally gave in to sleep around midnight, Noa’s fingers trailing loosely in Bakura’s long hair.
12. Temptation
He knew Bakura was extremely possessive of It and he knew the last time he’d tried Bakura had snapped at him and he knew he wasn’t allowed but damn if that gold wasn’t begging him to touch it.
13. View
To be honest, Noa had never seen (and had never wanted to see) another man naked before and, having walked in on Bakura in just that state, he found himself unable to look away with his cheeks flushing bright red.
14. Music
Noa had to admit a fondness for techno music, and he hoped it would grow on Bakura - the steady, throbbing beats were too good an opportunity to pass up.
15. Silk
“Slide your hand…” Bakura muttered, guiding Noa’s nervous fingers downward with his own hand until the boy moved them of his own accord, sliding them teasingly across his lower abdomen.
16. Cover
Bakura found himself off-put by the fact that he was tucking Noa in - but then, the boy would never know that it hadn’t been Seto or Mokuba who’d done it; and that was a comforting thought.
17. Promise
“Tell me, and I’ll keep your secrets,” Noa murmured, sounding as honest as he did curious, rubbing his thumb in slow circles on Bakura’s hand.
18. Dream
Sometimes, when Noa slept, he saw blue lights and taught wires and heard the steady drone of a computer and the inconsistent blips as it lived and breathed the way of machines; this made Noa shiver and turn to the body next to him, clinging to the warmth and reality and dream-real-life he wishes he could honestly have.
19. Candle
Something about kissing in the dark promised they’d be forgotten, ignored; snuffed out by reality like a candle’s weak flame.
20. Talent
As he heard the lock of the closet click shut behind him, Noa slumped against the rear closet wall and thought bitterly to himself, ‘You certainly have a way for getting yourself into trouble, Noa Kaiba.’
21. Silence
In the silence, they were allowed the illusion of hating one another; in the silence, they could let their thoughts go wild.
22. Journey
The train would hardly take him far enough away for comfort, but it would provide several blissful hours of free time wherein he could seriously think about what the fuck it was that he was involved in.
23. Fire
Bakura smirked, seeming amused by Noa’s trembling, “You’re nervous of this fire, aren’t you kid?”
24. Strength
It had never really bothered Bakura that Noa only appeared to be twelve years old; the kid had some kind of strength inside him and had proven to be more mature than Seto was on occasion.
25. Mask
In their language, saying ‘I hate you’ was only another way of testing each other.
26. Ice
“Your eyes aren’t so cold,” Bakura observed, walking around the stiff teenager in a slow circle, “I can’t quite liken you to ice.”
27. Fall
It was odd but comforting that Noa could ask, “Which of us do you think will die first?” and Bakura could respond with a smirk, “We’re both living on borrowed time already, kid,” and they’d both understand entirely what the other meant.
28. Forgotten
“You’re a bit like me, kid…” Bakura murmured softly, running a finger gently down Noa’s cheek, ignorant of the boy’s shivers, “You know just what it’s like to be forgotten and considered unreal, don’t you?”
29. Dance
Two left feet didn’t stop him from stepping forward to close the distance between them, kissing chapped lips even as he knew he was blushing.
30. Body
Noa pressed his hands against his chest and smiled, because he was real, god he was alive; Bakura observed him and felt a pang of reminiscence - discovering yourself to be alive again felt glorious.
31. Sacred
“A lesson to keep in mind, kid,” Bakura stated in the tone of one offering a nugget of golden wisdom, “Is that nothing is ever sacred - not you or your feelings or anything you care about, because people don’t give a shit.”
32. Farewells
Noa watched quietly as Bakura stepped through the portal (never mind how he travelled between realities, never mind how he swore up and down that Seto would make Noa live again) and felt lonely; “I guess this is goodbye…” he murmured when the way was closed.
33. World
“This is my world,” Noa declared proudly, his arms spread wide to encompass the whole of the digital landscape.
34. Formal
As Noa’s shirt crumpled to the floor, Bakura observed him and queried mildly, “Don’t you have any shame?” to which the boy replied with an impish smirk, “I don’t harbour regrets.”
35. Fever
Noa felt feverish and laughed - too bright, and too fake; Bakura was not fooled, and pulled back from him slowly.
36. Laugh
Bakura could be made to laugh at anything, Noa realised, but preferred things that were dark, bloody, and involved something frightened.
37. Lies
Noa’s eyes were blue and Bakura’s eyes were brown, and each pair had its own way of expressing honesty - neither set showed how easily they both could lie.
38. Forever
“I was convinced that I’d be trapped in there forever…” Noa mumbled quietly, his arms wrapped around himself; Bakura smirked and replied in a cocky tone, “Forever’s a damn long time, kid.”
39. Overwhelmed
“I pray to no god,” The words were half-choked coming from Bakura’s throat, his fists clenched around the steel pole he’d just swung hard against the solid brick, “and I never will, but damn if this choosing isn’t the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.”
40. Whisper
“Love me, love me,” Noa pleaded, tears streaming unchecked down his pale face, “Like no one else ever has, please.”
41. Wait
“If you would up and wait for five seconds…” Noa faded off as Bakura continued walking, and the frozen-cool feeling that he got when he was truly alone set in with a vengeance.
42. Talk
“Tell me,” Noa demanded stoutly, “You keep too many secrets to yourself.”
43. Search
Bakura’s glare was cold and his voice was bland, informing Noa by tone alone just how little he could be made to matter to the older boy, “I’ve been searching for the Millennium Items for a long time, I’m not going to stop because you don’t believe in their power.”
44. Hope
The shock still hadn’t worn off when Noa confided in Bakura, “I’d never allowed myself to really want this again… a body, a life; I didn’t dare risk the hoping.”
45. Eclipse
The moon passed in front of the sun, everything went dark; it was like the world ending but for the warm hand he could feel in his palm, calluses from climbing and theft rough on its surface.
46. Gravity
Noa stood at the top of the virtually created cliff and wondered how long it would take him to fall - it could be predicated, calculated, but whether or not there would be anyone there to defy the pull was unknown.
47. Highway
Things were going too fast - skin was blurring, sounds were muddled, touches were everywhere - and, admittedly, Noa was a little scared that the crash might kill a part of him.
48. Unknown
Noa couldn’t remember the last time he’d been involved in a string of events wherein the outcome was indeterminate - and that excited him.
49. Lock
No matter how much he pounded on the door, Noa refused to open it - and it infuriated Bakura even more that there was no apparent lock on the outside that he could pick.
50. Breathe
The silence in the room was almost choking as Bakura held onto Noa’s wrist and slowly eased the boy’s trembling hand up to the Ring; he knew he wasn’t breathing and the absolute hush meant Noa wasn’t either, but that was okay - they’d be able to breathe again later.
