We went today to Theodore Roosevelt Island, a first for both of us. It was very nice. We walked around and communed with a bit of nature, although the frequent airplanes coming in to National and the not-too-distant traffic on the GW Parkway helped us keep the feeling of being safely connected to this cluster of millions of people choosing to live in the same place. There was also a big statue of Teddy which looks only very slightly like a statue of an authoritarian dictator. He is surrounded by some marble slabs with nice quotations on them. We had brought a picnic and we ate pistachios and Japanese snacks on a bench overlooking some freshwater marsh. Very nice place to go if you just have a couple hours.
