Hmm. I don't think I would go that far. This is actually the first time I've thought anyone really fouled up in terms of customer service. Yeah, it's been a constant headache, but that's mostly just the way the process is set up when it comes into contact with all the other things going on in life (from becoming an FSO to moving from Japan to Korea to Duck to Rockville). Anyway, even today I didn't get the impression that the lady thought we were scum; more that she just couldn't be bothered to mitigate the bad news by trying to have a helpful attitude.

In apportioning blame and praise, I should also mention that there is an office in the State Department specifically to provide advice and help for employees whose foreign spouses are going through immigration procedures. They are incredibly helpful; I would be tearing my hear out without them. If anyone ever has to deal with USCIS, I strongly recommend having professional help of some kind, whether you hire an immigration lawyer or work with a community-based organization or luck out in the way that I have to work at a place where they provide such contacts as a job benefit.
