I just arrived in Zhongdian in the northern part of Yunnan Province in China. I spent a good bit of time in Lijiang which was quite a nice city with a good minority culture. I spent 2 1/2 days with a good group of people in Tiger Leaping Gorge, which I need to devote a whole post just to that, but I have to wait for a better computer so I can upload photos and what not.

China is treating me well now that I'm in Yunnan province. They seem to have the no smoking and spitting thing taken care of in this province, so I'm not choking on the 5 hour bus rides. But I guess when the bus goes over 12,000 feet smoking would be really bad.

I'm sick at the moment, got kind of a nasty cold with a fever, and I've visited a chinese doctor, but managed to lose the herbal tea. So I'm trying my hand at self medicating with chinese herbs from the pharmacy.

What's next? I'm going to spend an extra day in Zhongdian to hopefully recover from this funk, then on up to Deqin for a trek around Kawa Karpo, the most important mountain in Tibetan Buddhism, and then trekking to the Drung (Dulong) valley to see some of the lesser minorities of China. This valley also holds 80% of China's Biodiversity, the the Drung people used to tattoo their faces to keep the Tibetans from stealing their women, and some of the older women can still be seen with their tattoos.

After that it's off to Lhasa for a brief Tibetan experience then over to Nepal for trekking in the shadows of Everest and other giant mountains of the Himilaya. And if things go well, maybe even a climb up Island peak, 6,200 Meters (20,000) feet.
