Today is another one of the many Korean holidays to celebrate the love between couples. Though my students admit that it is a manufactured holiday thought up by the candy companies they still enjoy it. This day is kind of yang of the yin which is Valentine's Day. On Valentine's Day, women give chocolate to men... no expectations are had of the guy. Once March 14th rolls around though, it's the guys turn to give it up to the girls. Instead of chocolate they are meant to receive hard candies... though whoever came up with that idea was dead off.. What girl doesn't want chocolate?
So today I found myself doing my usual routine, going to the university to take me Korean religion and philosophy class, then on my way to work, I always have jjajang myeon at a restaurant near my school. Jjajang is noodles in a black bean sauce, and it's considered to be Chinese food here in Korea, even though it was invented in Korea by Chinese immigrants looking for something cheap to eat. You won't find this dish in China. Usually this restaurant isn't very crowded, maybe 2 or 3 other people eating there, and I've had this routine for a while now. But today, the place was packed, and everyone was eating Jjajang. It turns out that in protest of White Day, and all of the couples, single people will go out and eat the "black" noodles. So I bided my time slurping up my noodles with all of the other single people. YUM YUM.
