Hey :)
I have revised my essay and application for my Masters.. :) Can you let me know what you think - critically - of the essay? I want to mail it off by the end of the week, so if you could give feedback I'd GREATLY appreciate it!!!
Here it is....
I have seen how powerful counselling techniques and an understanding of psychology can assist those seeking to help people process pain and hurt. A healthy identity, good boundaries and overcoming trauma, abuse, negative mindsets and grief often require more than just sheer willpower on the part of individuals. What can be more beneficial is having people who are trained and equipped to accompany people practically with wisdom and insight. This is why I am seeking further training in counselling.
I have witnessed in my own life through difficult times how having someone come alongside me has helped me to become the person God created me to be. I have also had the opportunity to come alongside people from all walks of life and have had the privilege of witnessing many people heal, blossom and be set free through my listening, acknowledging their hurt and offering Godly counsel.
As I have travelled I have seen many desperate situations (ie: post-tsunami horrors in India, people suffering without clean water or food and a lack of education and basic needs in Africa and Thailand) and as I have been volunteering at Opportunity International over the past year and have had the chance to visit our field work in India, I have seen first hand how greatly people desire to lift themselves out of poverty and destitute emotional situations. These experiences have proceeded to both break my heart and motivate me to be part of a tangible solution to help people who are suffering. I desire to see people flourish in all areas of life - their self-esteem, being able to work, raise children, live in dignity and to be able to personally conquer unthinkable atrocities.
The 3 years that I have spent at Hillsong International Leadership College have helped my understanding of the importance of the Gospel in healing people and making them whole in Christ. However, I believe I need to be further equipped in counselling to fulfil my vision. It is my goal to work alongside an international humanitarian aid or relief organisation as a trauma counsellor and be part of a team of people offering tangible hope and faith. I believe that studying a Masters of Counselling at Wesley Institute will successfully equip me mentally, emotionally and spiritually for the journey that lies ahead of me.
