A good day for basses

It's been a good day so far. I went into town for the first time in weeks to take my Ashbory (the tiny little bass with the rubber strings) into Hobgoblin. I've had a problem for a while with one of the machine-heads unscrewing itself when I've tightened it up. The guy in the shop tried to get the machine-head apart, but it didn't want to know. He was able to check the thread, which I had assumed was damaged, but he said was fine. After about 10 minutes it occurred to us both at exactly the same time what the problem was. The thread on the top part of the machine-head is left-handed, so by putting the strings on the same way around as I would on other basses I am working against the screw. If I put them on the other way around the string tension will keep it together. Problem solved. He didn't charge me because he said it had been instructive for him (and the shop wasn't busy).

Next I went over the road to MusicGround and asked about getting a box to sort out the impedance on the WAV. They had no idea and recommended I try Pro Music Tech in Kirkstall. I hadn't been there before. On the way I stopped off at Maplins and got a 7 port USB hub. I had hoped to get a little MP3 active speaker set like the one Anne got there but they seem to have sold out.

At PMT I got referred around half the shop before they found someone confident enough to advise me. They reckoned a DI box wouldn't do the job, and an active graphic EQ was a better bet, so that's what I bought. I got the BOSS for about £80. There was a better one for £150, but I don't think I can justify that. Just tried it out on the little practice amp and it seems to work OK.

Sitting downstairs watching the time-shifted Spa qualifying now.
