Room 516, Thursday

The television had been dominated by people arguing about who was going to be the next king or queen of the country pretty much non-stop for days now, so Hyacinthe had retreated to his room to find something else to do. As entertaining as the television was ('twas like a world of plays on command!), he had noticed that a great deal of it could be ( Read more... )

Anders ... was bored. Bored, and restless, and roaming the halls of the dorms looking for either a snack or some kind of trouble.

The right kind of trouble.

He glanced into one of the dorm rooms he passed and saw Hyacinthe's dark head bent over some book. On impulse, he leaned in. "Please tell me you wouldn't mind a visitor."

"Non," Hyacinthe said, keeping his nose buried in his book. "'Tis a most engrossing read and I can't bear to put it down."

And that almost might have been believable if he hadn't been crooking his finger at Anders, beckoning him inside.

"Not even for a most charming and intriguing visitor, truly."

Anders snickered as he obeyed the beckoning finger to step into the room.

"I can do charming," he said. "I'm not sure about intriguing, but it doesn't matter, since you're too involved in your book to talk to me anyhow."

"Well, 'tis quite a good book," he said, then read off a few lines in D'Angelline. Or French. (Or even possibly Orlesian). "Roughly translated, it's describing the caress of winnowed chaff: "Place your hands on the waist of your beloved, drawing them upward slowly, gathering and lifting your beloved's hair so that it floats like chaff above the threshing floor, letting it fall like soft rain." Looking up at Anders, he gave him a slow smile. "You can see where I might be involved, no?"

Anders felt a funny little catch in his throat at the smile.

"I only caught on that you weren't actually talking about threshing halfway through," he said. "I assume you don't actually have to be in a barn."

"Not always," Hyacinthe said, scooting over to invite Anders over to sit near him on the bed. "But sometimes fun to visit. I had a good time in the stables a few months ago."

"Now that sounds like a good story," Anders commented, taking the seat next to Hyacinthe. "... naming no names, of course."
