From the expensive to the economy, each UK supermarket chain or food outlet has a certain type of customer associated with it. Right or wrong, the product branding is aimed squarely at those customers.

For example:

City types are assumed to go to the high-priced stores such as Marks & Spencer or Waitrose for their shopping. The ranges include deluxe ready-meals with lush packaging and exotic brand names.

The poor, such as those on Social Security benefits, are thought to frequent the super-cheap stores such as Lidl, Netto and Aldi. Here the packaging and product names are simple and direct. Sometimes they can overdo it though!
