yesterday my literary non-fiction professor was trying to explain when it's ok to bring fiction into memoir. in her book, she had to explain a scene that was important to the story, but it was an instance where she was absent. instead of fabricating completely, she acknowledged that she wasn't present for it and that it was just her way of seeing things. i said, well, then it's not ficition because if it's your memoir and you're saying, "this is the way i imagine this must have gone" then really what you're writing is non-fiction because you're writing about your imagination and that is a part of yourself not someone else. and at the same time we both were like, "whoaaaaa that's so meta." ha!
