Writer's Block: Wild Rumpus

That's such a good question I'm going to have to do a top ten.

1. Dakin - The Farthest Away Mountain, Lynne Reid Banks

2. Aravis - The Horse and his Boy, C.S. Lewis

3. Jim Hawkins - Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson

4. Foaly - Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer

5. Bartimaeus - The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Jonathan Stroud

6. Hanuman - Indian Legend

7. Bonnie - The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Joan Aiken

8. Bilbo Baggins - The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien

9. Jess the Squirrel Archer - Mossflower, Brian Jacques

10.The Very Hungry Caterpillar - The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle

I'm mildly surprised that Dakin's on the top there. I suppose it's because The Farthest Away Mountain is such a marvellous example of children's fantasy, it has absolutely everything I require from the genre.

A lot of people put characters from Narnia, mainly Lucy. But I'm going with Aravis, because unlike the characters from Earth, we first meet Aravis wearing her brother's armour, riding a talking horse across Calormen, seeking freedom in Narnia and the north. And when the book is over, Aravis doesn't have to go back to school - she stays there! Oh yes, I'm very happy with my choice.

Nobody from Harry Potter made it onto my list, because by book seven they all annoyed me so much I haven't actually read any of the books since - there's no way I want to actually be one of them.

Have to say though, nobody on my list has a particularly easy ride. That's why they're interesting characters.

Oh, except the Very Hungry Caterpillar :) What a classic.
