A soft wind breeze blew the bell which hung on the door of a bakery. Seemingly empty at first glance, but upon a second glance a female body, maybe even two, can be seen. The sound of the bell seemed to have awoken Tear, who sat up with a very confused and dazed look. She blinked twice before finally regaining her neutral face and observed her surroundings. First thing that enter her thoughts were the many baked goods that filled the air and shelves. Second thing was an Anise.
Though about a thousand questions were running through her head, she appeared to be very calm when she approached Anise.
"Mmphfft," Anise mumbled, as she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. "Waitaminnut... This isn't my bed." The smell of bread drifted around her and her nose perked up. She opened her eyes quickly and the light attacked her eyes. She blinked a few times, wiping a tear out of her eye as she tried take in her surroundings. Delicious bread-filled baskets surrounded her and she felt her heart flutter, before she noticed Tear approaching her. "Tear! Where are we?!"
Tear smiled slightly at Anise's awakening, maybe in amusement. "I really have no idea, though it seems to be a bakery of some sort"She replied, glancing around"We should see if anyone is in here"
"A bakery?" She looked at Tear curiously. "How did we end up in a bakery? Last I remembered, we were in the Belkend Inn..." Anise jumped off the very uncomfortable wicker chair she, apparently, was sleeping in and began to walk around cautiously, as if fearing something would jump out at her.
"Indeed it is strange," Tear sighed "Maybe the others are here as well.."
"I'll look around in the kitchen," Anise said, grabbing Tokunaga off the chair and attaching it to her back again before pushing through a gray door near the back of the bakery. She popped her head in, raised her nose and sniffed. "Fresh breaaad~" She could almost feel herself drool as she stepped into the kitchen and walked around tables covered with pans of freshly baked loaves of bread and cookies. Anise grabbed a cookie and stuffed it into her mouth as she examined the room a bit more. "No one's in here!" She yelled back at Tear before grabbing a few more cookies.
Tear followed the younger girl into the room. She tried hard to ignoring her empty stomach and the very delicious looking goods that surrounded her. Instead, she focused on the various cooking tools on the shiny counter, or they look like cooking tools. What else would a large wooden spoon be for?"I don't think you should eat that, what if it's poisoned?"Tear frowned, though her eyes were still on the tools.
A strange urge to bake overcame her.
"Poisoned?!" She nearly choked when Tear suggested that. She coughed and gasped for air, hacking up a few crumbs. She breathed deeply a few times, then tossed the other cookies back onto the tray. "I'm so hungry, though." Anise complained, grabbing her growling stomach.
She patted Anise gently on the back. "Yeah me too"Tear bit her lower lip gently. She looked around the room again, disappointed to find nothing to test for poison. Her eyes once again, rested on the cooking tools, and an idea sprung up. "What if we bake for ourselves instead?"That idea made Tear's heart jumped with glee, something she would never do, to prevent strange looks from Anise and a dent in her pride.
"Bake? I've never baked something before." Anise always had problems with baking things, because she would always go off and do other things, forgetting about it until she could smell something burning and end up with a plate of black cookies.
"Oh, that's fine," Tear nodded as she approached the tools, in almost a possessive way. "You can help if you want."
She rolled her sleeves up and went to Tear's side. "Alright! What can I do?"
Tear opened the refrigerator and cabinets and was surprised to find all the necessary ingredients to bake just about anything. Also, another pleasant surprise, she found two rather cute pink aprons. She happily wore it, though she'll never admit to it, and handed the smaller one to Anise.
"We can start by making an Angel Cake," She said mostly to herself, though Anise clearly heard her. "Pre-heat the oven at 350 F and let's start mixing the eggs and flour~."
She placed a large silver bowl in front of her and started to pour the flour.
Anise took the pink apron, looped it over her head, then tied it quickly behind her back. "An angel cake!~" She said in a singsongy tone as pulled a few curls stuck under the apron. "350 degrees..." She mumbled to herself as she bent down to the oven and set the appropiate temperature. "Okay, pre-heating now!"
Tear absent-mindedly waved the wooden spoon, which was damped with flour from its journey in the silver bowl, resulting flour being sprinkled lightly on Anise and herself. "Well it's only two of us, so i think 6 eggs whites are fine," She replied, still waving the spoon" Do you know how to separate the yolk and the white?"
"Yup~" She nodded, grabbing another bowl. She carefully cracked an egg in half and used the halves to allow the whites to spill freely into the bowl, as the yolk sloshed around the eggshell. After she finished, Anise tossed the eggshell into a small bowl and went onto the next egg. She finally finished the task a few minutes later and handed the bowl to Tear. "Done! A little bit of yolk slipped in though." She frowned a bit, staring at the small yellow spot floating in the egg whites.
Tear handed the black-haired girl a plastic measuring cup. "Get the warm water please?"She asked, before placing a similar cup in her own hands. She reached for the bag of white sugar, that was conveniently placed near the eggs. Carefully tipping it over and shaking it, bits of sparkling white crystal start to fill the cup. When she was satisfied with the amount, a silver spoon mashed upon it, eliminating any clumps.
Anise grabbed the cup and skipped over to the sink. She turned a knob and a few spaced gushes of water fell from the faucet before it turned into a steady stream. She stuck a finger in the stream, her other hand fiddling with the knobs to get the water fairly warm. She quickly filled the cup and rushed back to Tear with it. "Here you go~"
Thanks~"She gently poured the water into the flour, stirring it in with the wooden spoon.
"Hmm, can you check the cabinets for Vanilla Extract and some cream of tartar?"
Tear poured the sugar from before and Anise's egg whites, mixing all together. A scary result of white mushy blob appeared at first, but with constant gentle stirring it slowly becomes smoother. The contain in the silver bowl looks almost edible.
"Vanilla extract and cream of tartar~" She hummed to herself as she went about her task of searching for the ingredients. She rummaged through the many cabinets, pushing aside bowls and cans. "Aha!" Anise pulled out two small jars and brought them back to the older girl. "I hope the people who own this place here don't mind us taking their things." She eyed the door of the kitchen, hoping someone wouldn't come in, though that'd mean this place wasn't deserted. "Feels kinda empty here, doesn't it?"
Tear inspected the pan for a bit before she nodded in approval. She reached over for a container, that looks to be used to spray plants, and sprayed around the pan a few times. The oil droplets glisten in the light. "The oven should be done pre-heating by now," Tear said and poured the mixture into the pan "Do you want to put it in the oven?"
"Sure!" She took the now-filled pan in one hand and used the other to open the oven. "Whoa, it sure is hot!" Anise gasped, feeling a cloud of heat rising out into the kitchen. She slid the pan inside carefully onto the middle rack and quickly closed the oven door. "Fourty five minutes to go~ What are we going to do until then?" She wondered out loud, looking up at the clock that hung above the oven.
"Well, wandering around wouldn't hurt"Tear replied, dusting her apron "Though leaving this place unattended isn't the best idea" She untied the back strings of the apron and brought the one around her neck over her head. She placed it carefully in the hooks by the gray door, noticing some flour on her shoulder she brushed it off.
"Yeah, we might forget the cake and it'll get burnt.." She mused, cheeks a bit flushed as she remembered her own past attempts at baking. Anise took off her apron as well, patting it a bit to make sure any flour would get off, and returned it to its place. She plucked Tokunaga off her back and patted him down as well. "So we just wait here?" She asked, glancing back at the cookies on the table. "Boo~ I'm so hungry."
"Maybe you can go take a nap,"Tear suggested as she pushed the door open, holding it out for Anise to walk through.
"A nap sounds good. I feel kinda tired out. Baking is hard work!" She exclaimed, gave a yawn and hugged Tokunaga closer to her. "I can't wait to eat the cake. Make sure to wake me!" She walked through the door, back to the front of the bakery. Anise sat back in the wicker chair she had woken up mysteriously in not too long ago and found herself sleeping soundly within minutes.
Tear nodded and lets go of the door, it swung a few times before coming to a complete stop. She walked over and sat near Anise's chair, pulling her knees close to her chest. A sweet odor from the cake already invaded the room.
Tear woke up slightly startled, she haven't even realize that she fell asleep until now. The room now felt really warm and the cake smelt sweeter than she last remembered. Moments later an annoying beeping sound indicated that 45 minutes was over. Turning her head, she saw the black-haired girl in pig tails hugging Tokunaga affectingly. She reached over and gently shook her arm. "Anise?"
"Hmm?" The young girl muttered into plush's head. She slowly opened her eyes and noticed Tear by her side. "Oh! Is the cake done?" She grinned, ready to finally eat something. She felt like she hadn't eaten anything in forever, despite her memory telling her she had eaten with everybody in the Inn.
"Yeah it's done"She said as she stood up, a dull ache formed around her body from the strange sleeping position. However, being Tear, you couldn't tell that she was about to fall over.
"Let's hurry then!" She wrapped Tokunaga's arms around her shoulders and ran off into the kitchen, the doll bouncing along with her steps.
Tear gave an amused smile to the little girl's energy and followed her into the kitchen.
Anise slipped on some oven mitts and opened the oven, though a bit clumsily because she couldn't grip the handle with the mitts on. She peeked inside and pulled the pan out slowly. She gave a small gasp when she saw the cake had survived without burning anywhere and almost melted at the smell of it. "Uwaah~ It smells so good!" She placed it on the table and took another whiff. "We have to let it cool, don't we?" She looked towards Tear.
"Yeah"Tear nodded and went to peaked in the fridge "We should frost it as well" She pulled out the cool container and placed the vanilla frosting next to the pan of cake.
"It'll take about ten minutes to cool"
"Boo~!" Anise cried. "That's ten minutes too long!" She puffed up her cheeks, frowning. Then she heard a couple beeps and she perked her head up. "What was that?" She wandered away from the cake and looked around the counters. Beep! There! She reached inside one of the cabinets and pulled out a small machine. There was another beep and Anise reached back inside, pulling out another one. Beepbeep. "Ahh, it's so annoying!" She opened one of them and the screen blinked a blue before displaying "Enter name_".
Well this is strange"
Tear took one gently from Anise's hand and turned the device around a few times. "It looks like some sort of Fontech, but I never seen this before" She frowned and the "Enter Name_" stared back at her. Mentally shrugging, she punched in her name "Tear Grants" and pushed enter. A strange bling sound came from it and the screen now display "Welcome Tear!"
Anise looked over at Tear's screen and blinked. "What do you think it's for?" She opened hers as well and typed her name in. Her screen seemed to greet her with her very own, "Welcome Anise!" as well.
"I'm not sure,"Tear replied truthfully, still staring strangely at the device. "This days seems to just get stranger.."
Anise shrugged. "Yeah. I don't get what's going on around here." Her stomach growled. "Okay!!~ After we eat, let's get out of this bakery and try to figure out where we are!"
Tear nodded and slipped the device into her many hidden pockets. She took a quick glanced at the clock before reaching for the frosting. "Mmm ten minutes up. Want to help me frost it?"She handed Anise a butter knife she got from the drawers behind her.
Anise placed the machine on the table and grabbed the butter knife, but she didn't want to use it for frosting. "Ahh! I'm too hungry to care about the frosting!" She cut out a little piece and popped it into her mouth. "Fuuwaaah~ This is like heaven!" She exclaimed, cutting off another piece. "Melts in my mouth, tastes so sweet~ You're an amazing baker, Tear!~"
Tear laughed quietly as Anise ate another piece, using her own butter knife , she also cut a small piece. She gingerly took the cake and bit into it, Anise was right it really did melt in your mouth. "Thanks," She smiled, taking another bit. "I'm surprise I remember the recipe"
The little girl continued eating the cake, as she fiddled around with the computer. "What a weird fon machine. I wonder if it does anything else." She punched in a few random keys and suddenly the screen blinked, 'search: _____.' "Hey, something popped up! Search..? What should we type in?"
"Maybe we can try to find the others, " Brushing the crumbs off her fingers, she took out her own machine.
"So who should we search for first?" Anise wondered, ready to type in a name.
"Try Luke" Tear fiddled with her machine, but not actually pressing the buttons.
"Luke... fon... Fabre." She said as she typed it out. The computer seemed to be still for a few moments before it showed: 'Luke fon Fabre : 1 result.' "Hey, it came up with something!"
"Really? Does that mean he's here too?"Tear stared at the screen, leaning a bit closer without realizing it. "Does it say anything else about him?"
"Not yet." Anise pushed the enter key, hoping it would do something. Lines of text flashed by quickly, too quickly for her to read, but then it stopped and there was only one line left. 'Luke fon Fabre: not_a_replica'
"Oh, that doesn't lead us anywhere," Tear sighed, and straighten herself "That doesn't seem to mean anything either. Luke is a replica"
"That's true, but he's still his own person.." Anise bit her bottom lip, memories of Ion flashing through her mind. She stuffed the last of the cake in her mouth and closed the computer. "Maybe we should see if we can find people here."
"Of course he is,"Tear nodded. "Yeah, it'll be good to know the area. It seems we might be here for a while"
"Alright, let's go!~" She stomped off, bursting through the gray kitchen doors, the little bell ringing as she exited the bakery out onto the streets of a city they knew nothing about.
We do not recommend trying out the recipe. :x
