Put bluntly, Kaoru was confused. In light of recent events, it wasn't an uncommon occurrence, but it really wasn't one he wanted to become overly familiar with. He'd woken up somewhere completely different to where he'd expected (the whole falling asleep thing hadn't been a surprise, to be fair). He'd entirely expected to find himself in 2006 and, more to the point, in Dr. Himoru's lab. As it was, he certainly wasn't in the latter of the two, as for the year? He had absolutely no clue what-so-ever. Feasibly, he could be in any year, but realistically speaking, he wasn't in 1623. Or 1864. In a way, at least that much was comforting; he wasn't about to get mistaken for any miscellaneous samurai or shinsengumi, nor, he hoped, get attacked. Certainly the latter was appealing.
Eyebrows knitted together to form a confused expression, Kaoru decided that it would probably be for the best if he at least start walking, perhaps find some people that would be able to tell him what was going on, and if anyone had seen his - Dr. Himuro's - coat. He needed that to get back. The fact that he didn't have it- Taking a deep breath, Kaoru looked down towards the ground, momentarily spinning on the spot to make sure he hadn't missed the thing; he certainly wasn't wearing it.
Groaning, he muttered audibly to himself, the phrases varying between different types of questions as to where 'it' was and curses. Finding someone might speed up the process of finding it, he reasoned. Chewing on his bottom lip, he stood still for a few moments, debating in what direction to go, before hearing someone call out. Looking up, his brown eyes wide, he cautiously turned his attention to the approaching voice. Eyes falling on a boy, Kaoru relaxed somewhat (well, they were dressed in modern clothes and they didn't seem to be carrying a weapon. That was good, right?)
"Ah! Hello!" Murata waved as he saw someone else and walked toward Kaoru fearlessly. "Excuse me for the weird question but what is the name of this town?"
He smiled as he waited for a reply and looked the other over briefly. He looked nice enough. Murata didn't feel like he was in any danger, despite the unusual circumstances.
Raising his eyebrows, Kaoru stared at the boy for a few moments; the question had been completely unexpected and surely it was him that should be asking that? (Or rather, the year, he wasn't that interested in where he was until he knew when he was). At least he hadn't been informed he was someone else; that was the only plus. "You don't know?" He asked, glancing about at his surroundings as if that would give him an idea.
"I just... Got here", he half-explained. "You haven't seen a white coat, have you? It's... White, with some silver bits", he added, tone rather earnest, and gesturing loosely at his shoulders. "I need it. I think someone stole it". He'd never been in this exact situation before; he'd always had some idea of just what the vague historical scenario was (ie. Men with swords tended to mean he was quite a while ago). "What-", he started, wishing he had that device that told him of the year. "What year is it?"
After a few moments, however, it dawned on him that the boy didn't know where he was; Kaoru wasn't entirely sure what to make of that, now that he thought about it. Of course, it made sense for him to be confused about where and when he was, but for someone else to be confused about exactly the same matter was a little concerning. "How come you don't know where you are?" He asked, after a pause.
"I just got here too! I was walking home and then I was suddenly walking down a different street - this street - and this looks nothing like Japan!" He tilted his head, studying Kaoru. "What year is it?" He echoed. "Why are you asking that? Are you from some alternate dimension and you became lost in time or something?"
He sighed a little then. "No, I haven't seen any coats and... oh! I've forgotten my manners! I'm Murata," he smiled again.
"It doesn't", Kaoru agreed, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. This didn't make any sense. How could this boy suddenly appear somewhere? And it didn't seem that he knew anything about Dr. Himuro and his work (Kaoru had the distinct feeling that he'd been the only one 'stupid' enough to have answered that flier). "I'm not from any alternate dimension!" He stated, frowning and pushing his lips together. The coat didn't do alternate dimensions; it only dealt with time, and certain skills.
His expression fell as soon as Murata mentioned he hadn't seen his coat (he wasn't sure what he expected, though; the boy wasn't wearing it, and if he did know what it was, it probably wasn't likely he'd be all that willing to give it back). "I need to find it! This is really bad. I won't be able to..." He trailed off, expression downcast before being replaced with a look of brief surprise. "Oh! I'm Kazamine Kaoru. It's nie to meet you", he responded.
"Mm, Murata Ken," he elaborated on his name. "It is nice to meet you too!" His whole demeanour was very cheerful as if he didn't have a care in the world. "Can't you just get a new coat? I'm sure there must be a shop around here somewhere....," he trailed off as he glanced around the area, eyes searching for shop signs.
He had to admit, he was quite ...He supposed the word would be 'touched', although he felt that that was perhaps a bit too strong. Whatever the case, he liked Murata's apparent incessant cheerfulness; it was nice. At the question, however, Kaoru couldn't help but pull a face, the answer of 'no' reflected blatantly in his expression. "That coat is kind of... There's only one of it", he responded, shifting a bit uncomfortably. "It'll sound strange, but having it back would probably help me get back home", he answered, beginning to feel a bit uncomfortable with the situation (although, he figured the worst thing Murata could do was think him mad).
Unable to help looking around as Murata did, Kaoru's eyes fell on little that he would deem immediately worth his paying attention to; he had more important things to focus on. He wondered whose fault this entire thing was. Cocking his head to one side, he hummed softly to himself for a moment before speaking again. "Perhaps it would be better not to stay in one place", he murmured.
"Oh, a special coat? Maybe that's why you're here. Because you lost it," he said matter-of-factly.
"Or maybe it just dropped somewheree around here. Let's have a look around!" He started walking again, a grin on his face. He felt good having a mission. Maybe that was why he had been brought here: to find this special coat. It did sound strange but he expected there must be a deeper purpose underneath it all.
"No, I wouldn't be here because I lost it! I'm probably here because of it, and I can't go anywhere because I don't have it!" He replied, a touch exasperated by the entire situation. "And someone would have had to have taken it, because I was wearing it. I had to be wearing it", he continued, words tumbling out of his mouth, his tone somewhere between annoyed and frustrated. "Someone took it last time something like... But they're not- This is the wrong time. I don't understand", he finished, tone softer and voice quieter.
Starting to walk after Murata, Kaoru took several large steps to catch up with him, attention frequently flicking to the buildings they were walking past. He didn't think it was necessary to re-iterate the fact that the coat was white; he figured he'd probably already got that fact across quite well. A thought occurred to him, maybe, even though it wasn't as good as returning home immediately, it would be something of a consolation. "What year are you from?" He'd ask the more pertinent of the two questions once - and if - it was established that Murata was from the same time as he was (perhaps the boy was just suffering from some kind of rather specific temporary memory loss which was he couldn't remember where he was?)
"When I last checked the paper it was the year 2000," Murata replied. He knew that if this was some kind of alternate world it could be any time and time could also move at a different pace here so he was prepared for any answer Kaoru would next give.
"So what does this special coat of yours do that it is so vital that you find it again?" He continued as they searched around.
((ooc note: I'm taking the year from the first published version of Murata's series since I don't think an actual year was mentioned but it was modern.))
"2000?" Kaoru repeated, falling silent immediately after. Well, that was certainly a lot more modern than the places he'd ended up previous. It occurred to him at this point that he actually had no idea as to how the time machine thing worked, and as to whether the years were preset and input manually, or whether they were more random than that. He'd been under the impression - up until this point, that was - that they were input manually (how, he wasn't entirely sure, but he presumed that Dr. Himuro or Miki had done it themselves).
"I-" Somehow, it had been easier explaining it to Saizo; after all, he'd had the coat, he was able to show her that he wasn't completely mad. Also... They were from a time that wasn't so dubious about possible powers (although she had been somewhat convinced at first that it was shinobi magic, but that was besides the point). "It's 2006. Or, it is where I'm from. The coat, it can do several things, but mostly, it can..." He paused, shooting Murata a sidelong glance. "Mostly, it can allow you to travel through time", he finished, speaking quickly as if to finish the sentence as fast as possible. "If I find it, I can go home. I'm meant to be home..."
((ooc: O-oh! Sorry to have put you on the spot there xD;))
"Ooooh, you're living in the future? So have you been sent back here on a secret mission to save the world from an imminent disaster or something?" He looked impressed and certainly didn't seem to be just humoring him. "So we have to find the coat so you can get back to your time and the world will end if you don't?"
((ooc:It's okay! I knew it was 2000-something just I don't think it was clearly stated.))
"Well, it's not the future to me", Kaoru responded, a brief smile appearing on his lips, slowing his pace as he walked (he really had no idea where they were even walking to). "I'm not even meant to be back here. At least, I don't think so. I was- Before- I was..." He sighed and pulled a face, realising just how difficult it would be for him to explain. "I was in 1623 and then, um, I don't think that really I was meant to go back there in the first place. It wasn't- I answered a flier; I needed a job, and well..." He laughed awkwardly. "That wasn't mentioned. Anyway, I was there and... You know about that era Japan, right? Well, because I was there, an acting troupe was k-killed because of me and that meant that dance and acting was practically wiped out from Japan. So, I went back again, and managed to stop them from getting killed because of me again. Then I meant to come back, but I was... I'm here, instead. I really don't think the world will end if I don't go back to 2006", he answered, pulling at his sleeves. "And I'm definitely not on any 'secret mission'".
"No dancing and acting? That would be very boring if there was none of that," Murata looked rather stunned. "No plays and no disco and..... Oh, there may be disco as that isn't traditional," he laughed.
Then he sobered again, "But it would be terrible to lose all the traditional dancing and plays. So you fixed it? Everything worked out all right?"
Kaoru frowned, pressing his lips together for a few brief moments. "I think so. I hope so. I don't know until I..." He suddenly looked across at Murata, staring at him for a moment. "But if you're from 2000, and there's dancing and things there, then it worked, right? Then I don't need to worry about that" . He remained quiet after that; if he had been able to fix what he'd changed, than that was good, but that still didn't stop him from really wanting to go back home or, at least, be somewhere other than here. He didn't understand what was going on with this place, particularly as it seemed that he wasn't the only person that had more or less 'appeared' there. It was, he realised, more frustrating than anything that had happened previous as it was seeming that there was absolutely nothing he could do about it (and, the more he thought about it, the more he realised that the realistic chances of his coat being here were incredibly slim, particularly as there didn't seem to be anyone that managed to resemble anyone he had come across in one form or another numerous times in the past).
"I wonder how we can leave here", he vocalised finally. It was more of a metaphorical question than anything as, if Murata really had just arrived, he wouldn't know how to leave either, with or without Dr. Himuro's coat.
Eyebrows knitted together to form a confused expression, Kaoru decided that it would probably be for the best if he at least start walking, perhaps find some people that would be able to tell him what was going on, and if anyone had seen his - Dr. Himuro's - coat. His eyes darted around but he didn't find what he was looking for. "We should try to find a fountain or a lake or something!"
