Ed nodded. "It's a lot of work because it's a precise science," he explained. "It takes a lot of concentration and a lot of studying. But the result... is amazing. What you can do with it... what you can do for others with it...it's worth all of it."
He sighed after a while, "Well...if you say so. I guess you would know since you seem to be really good at it. So what's next? Do I read that book or something?" He motioned towards the book that Ed had brought along with him from the other room.
When the blonde boy returned, Luke studied the chalk with curiosity. He couldn't help but do so, since he had not seen Edward draw anything prior to doing alchemy. His green eyes then landed on the book. So he would have to read, then? That wasn't too much of a hassle, in Luke's opinion. He had done quite a bit of reading to learn pretty much everything he knew at that moment about the sword. So really, he had no problem with reading. The red head stood where he was, awaiting the blonde-haired boy's instructions.
Ed took the little item he had made and set it in front of Luke as he sat on the floor again. "The first step to it is getting an understanding of the material you're working with. If you don't fully understand the composition of it, nothing will work,"
He listened to the other's words. So this meant that he needed to start learning about metal and stuff. How boring. He couldn't help but wonder where Guy was. Guy would probably be able to help him learn about this sort of thing...
With that, Luke sat down on the floor in front of the item, looking down at it with a slight frown, "So...what kind of metal is this made of?"
Ed looked at it and picked it up, moving his hand a little as if to test the weight. "Well, since it's composed of flatware, it's steel. BUT you can tell by the density and weight to size ratio that there's indeterminable alloys mixed in and impurities... as long as you understand this and keep it in mind, you should be fine with something simple like this."
He tried to take in what the other had just said, but he failed to understand so much as half of it, "...Uh..." He scratched the back of his head and went over the other's words one more time in his head, but still failed to understand them. He gave a frustrated sigh, "...I don't know much of anything about metal. So I really have no idea what you just said..."
Ed blinked. "Oh.. well. Sorry about that. I've been studying this stuff since I was a little kid.. I know it all by heart," he replied, before thinking. "Okay. So think of the steel like a base metal. They add alloys, like aluminum, to make the metal softer and easier to craft," he explained. "There's impurities from anything not burned off in the fire when they molded it."
He set the little item down. "Now that's about... hm... 100 grams?" he mentioned. "You have to keep the amount in mind."
The red head frowned before giving a nod. He understood some of it now. But it would take a lot of reading for him to understand all of it. When Ed said the weight of the object and sat it back down, the long haired one picked the object up himself. After feeling the weight of it, he sat it back down.
"Reading would be best," Ed advised, "I'll be frank. It took me my whole childhood to learn what I know and I fluke that made it so I don't have to use alchemical circles."
He blinked, "Alchemical circles? What are those?" He asked almost instantly. So there were circles involved now? This was really getting confusing. He was especially surprised about the 'whole childhood' part. So this was going to take a LOT of studying...just great. What had he gotten himself into?
