Haruhi sat under the slide of a small park, the only place she could find to shield herself from the freezing rain. Though she was already soaked to the bone, she figured it was better to find some shelter and it had been starting to get hard to walk. She sighed and rested her head on her knees, if only she could remember where she was, then she would be able to actually do something productive.
"Haruhi?" She blinked and raised her head to the sound of her name and saw the person she wanted to see more than anything.
He had barely heard anything, but he could've sworn that was Haruhi's voice. He edged around the playground, looking for signs of the girl and--... And when had it started raining? Suddenly, he felt like the male lead in one of those cheesy romance movies--but he should still go get Haruhi.
Out of luck, he spotted a leg poking out from under the slide and headed towards it. He ducked over, breathing a sigh of relief when it was indeed Haruhi sitting there. Then, the awkwardness set in.
As Kyon ducked under the slide, Haruhi felt a great relief wash over her at the sight of, not only someone she remembered, but the boy who was at the very least, her best friend.
"Yeah, I'm fine," She mumbled before a coughing fit took over her. There were bruises on her face and legs along with a few cuts, and she seemed to be even skinnier than before. She was also completely soaked.
Kyon winced when Haruhi started coughing. An injured girl out on a rainy day just wasn't a good combination. Sighing, he took off his mostly dry jacket and draped it around her shoulders.
"Come on, Haruhi. We should get you somewhere dry. You really shouldn't be out in the rain like this--especially while soaking wet."
Haruhi opened her mouth to protest at being treated like a helpless damsel in distress but was interrupted by another coughing fit. Wincing, she gripped Kyon's arm for support as she struggled to stop hacking up a lung.
Somewhere in Kyon's brain, the thought that this-isn't-going-to-work-Haruhi-can't-even-walk-for-two-seconds-without-coughing hit in, and he offered a sigh in response. Knowing fully that next time Haruhi was in good health, she was going to KILL him for this, he turned around and crouched down, outstretching his arms.
"Come here. I'll carry you. And put that jacket over your head."
Haruhi frowned at him, she didn't want to be carried like a child but the fact was she couldn't walk on her own. So she gave a tired nod and climbed onto his back, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck and resting her head on his shoulder. Then she pulled the jacket over her head, like he told her to.
The way Haruhi was being obedient and somewhat timid was a little alarming, but Kyon figured the girl had been through more than enough for now and could just use somewhere warm and some dry clothes. And maybe a doctor for her headache.
He let out a little sigh before standing to his feet. Maybe back to his place in the hotel would be best.
"Don't worry about it." And he had to mention how weird it was hearing Haruhi express gratitude.
Haruhi doozed against Kyon's shoulder, slipping in and out of conciousness as he carried to the hotel that she no longer recongnized as her home. But she did at least recognize it as a warm place to stay, and getting out of her wet clothes would be nice.
But as long as Kyon was with her, it would be okay.
Feeling Haruhi go slightly limp behind him, Kyon let out another sigh of relief. Sleeping would probably help her feel better. Of course there would be a problem once he got her back to the room and she would have to change but, for now it was ok.
He jogged the rest of the way to the hotel, ducked in, and rode the elevator up to where he remembered Haruhi's room was. Hopefully some of her clothes were still there.
Haruhi jerked awake from a coughing fit as Kyon entered the hotel room. For a few seconds she panicked, unsure of where she was and a bit unnerved at the unconscious familiarity. Then she remembered that Kyon was with her and the fear subsided.
The coughing fit made Kyon wobble slightly--in fact, he nearly fell over in the process. Fortunately, he was able to lean sideways on the wall to brace himself. He let out a breath of relief. Falling flat on his face with Haruhi on his back really did not sound like fun.
"In your old room," he explained while straightening himself out. "Guess you wouldn't remember if you had left any clothes here, huh?"
Haruhi shook her head against Kyon's neck. There was nothing outwardly familiar about the room except for the small homely feeling it gave her. She felt like such an idiot, why couldn't she remember such important things? I can remember Kyon, she reminded herself, that was the most important thing.
Yeah. He doubted she would remember anything like that. That left it up to him to do some searching. He inwardly hoped--sincerely hoped--he wouldn't run into her bras or underwear or something. Now that would be awkward.
Trudging over to the bed, he ducked down again so she could climb off.
"Sit here. I'll go search for some dry towels or something then."
Haruhi nodded and as soon as he was out of sigh in the bathroom, she stripped off her wet skirt and shirt, coughing as she did. After tossing them into a pile on the floor, she looked down to examine herself.
There were bruises across her stomach, arms, and chest and ribs starting to become visible under the black and blue skin. Haruhi swallowed at the ugly sight, what the hell had happened to her?
For a moment, Kyon stopped to wonder who the hell was taking care of all these hotel rooms anyway since there didn't happen to be workers or natives in the area. But nevertheless, there were stacks of clean towels ready for use. It was a little mindboggling, but he simply shook his head and picked a couple up anyway. They were white, clean, and smelled of fresh laundry detergent.
Holding up the towels, he stepped back out of the bathroom in determination to go look for some dry clothes next. "Hey, Haruhi. I got some tow--"
He blinked. Once. Twice. Then promptly fell backwards and proceeded to crawl back into the bathroom, face aflame.
"HARUHI. WHY. ...WHY."
Though that was kind of a stupid question since she was wet and probably dying of cold and so sh--oh what the hell. He gathered enough strength to toss the towels over in her general direction. The other hand was busy covering his eyes.
"Haruhi?" She blinked and raised her head to the sound of her name and saw the person she wanted to see more than anything.
"Kyon?"
