After the days work was completed, the lanky silver haired man triple checked that his master and all other inhabitants of the home were well taken care of and sound asleep; then quietly moved to his desk and wrote out a note.

To whomever may find this;
I’ve gone out for the night. There is no need to worry, I’m simply going to see an old friend to talk. I promise you that I will be back before morning and that this will not effect the performance of my duties in any way.
-Riff

He hoped from the bottom of his heart that this night would not be one of the nights where Cain slipped into his room after a bad dream and shook him awake to fix a cup of tea. He imagined the young earl would be less than pleased to find him missing when he needed him, especially so soon after he thought the older man had left him for good.
He did not want to hurt him like that, ever again.

Slipping out onto a dark street, Riff was both surprised and pleased that his feet still knew their way around the city. Without really thinking he retraced his steps swiftly back to the hotel where Gunter, Otogi and himself had stayed before parting ways. Apparently Gunter had taken a liking to the area, and decided to live there.

It certainly made it easier to find him.

It would be good for both of them, Riff decided, to sit down and relate to each other the events that had happened while they were apart. He hadn’t had a ‘friend’, per say in quite some time. But Gunter had been the second person he met after coming to this place; and had traveled with him while he searched for Cain, even putting off the search for his own companions to help.

Riff found himself staring at his own reflection through a set of gold numbers.
“2501.” He read aloud before raising a hand to knock.

Hearing a knocking at the door, the pacing mazoku nearly jumped out of his skin. Exhaling sharply to calm himself, he made his way to the door and smiled at the familiar face on the other side of the threshold.

"Please, come in. I've put water on for tea, if you should like some"

Gesturing to the sitting area, Gunter closed the door behind Riff and followed him to the seating area.

Riff gave the other man a gentle smile and stepped through the doorframe.

“Ah, yes please.” He responded. “Though you really didn’t have to go through the trouble.” He took a seat on the sofa, in the same place he had fallen asleep before.
Riff liked this particular couch, it was comfortable.

He raised an eyebrow at the lavender-haired man, curious as to what had happened. He seemed different than the last time they had been in contact. More …worried, or unnerved perhaps? It wasn’t obvious, but it did show.
Despite their friendship, they were both from places which put a high emphasis on courtesy (and of course, were both servants of a lord). He knew they wouldn’t get around to the meat of the matter until after tea and a bit of small talk, but he was already finding himself concerned.

"It's no trouble at all."

Rushing into the kitchenette, clinking sounds were heard, along with the sounds of breaking glass and finally, pouring of the tea. Sauntering his way back to his guest, he placed a small tray on the table with two cups and a container of cream and sugar. Taking hold of a cup, he sits back into a chair and smiles, taking a small sip of the tea.

Riff carefully removed his cup from the tray and stirred in a spoonful of sugar before bringing it to his lips. He took a few sips and placed it back onto the saucer, then returned his attention to the other man.

“Have you been well here? Not lonely, I hope.” He asked, starting conversation. The sound of breaking glass in the kitchen had confirmed his suspicions that something was amiss.

Resting the cup in his hand, Gunter sighs deeply before speaking.

"Mostly, things have been well. I was alone for quite some time, but during that time I was able to begin to study the written language. I had met up with someone from Shin Makoku, as I'm sure you remember from her comments in the device. We somehow separated, and..."

His words were cut short, as he stopped himself from speaking. Usually, he would be able to ramble on for ages, but he stopped himself, knowing that the possibility that Riff could encounter danger was always lurking. Changing the subject quickly, he inquires about Riff's situation.

"You've said that you've been having some problems readjusting with Cain. Has your situation gotten any better?"

“Mm.” Riff thought it was good Gunter had been putting his time towards such a constructive activity. He could clearly recall the embarrassed looks Gunter would get when he found he couldn’t read a sign or note.
Then something connected in his head as the lavender haired man mentioned the comments on his device

“….from Shin Ma.. Ko..ku? Oh! You must be referring to the spirited woman I mistook for your wife?” he said, smiling slightly at the memory of the strange (though short) conversation they’d had. Something about wanting to test a cleaning invention on his dirtied suit coat?

Riff picked up his cup again and took another sip. Things had seemed well until Gunter abruptly stopped talking. It was very unlike the other man to cut himself off. Under normal circumstances (and if he were speaking about his King) he wouldn’t have stopped for the next ten or twenty minutes.

He gave the other man a worried look, and answered his question simply as a hint that he knew something was amiss.
“It’s been steadily improving, yes.”

Gunter was amused by the thought of Anissina as 'spirited' and disgraced at the thought of her as his wife. But under the circumstances, it was a logical assumption and Gunter let it pass. However, he did notice that Riff's answers regarding Cain have been short and not very detailed. He wondered if he was in a situation where he could not explain much either. Would make for a difficult conversation, if it were.

Thinking for a moment, he recalls a message from Riff about Merryweather and decides that perhaps that might be a possible outlet for conversation.

"Say, Riff... I believe you've mentioned it before, but did you say that Miss Merryweather had returned home? She was safe after leaving us, I hope."

Apparently Gunter hadn’t taken the hint from his short response. Riff was more concerned about what was causing his friend to act this way than the conversation at hand, but Gunter had also not seen Miss Merry between the time when she ran away from them and the time when she was transported home; he deserved to be informed.

“From what master Cain has told me, I’d say yes. Not to mention she left with a trusted friend of his… and Cain’s Uncle Neil I’m sure is looking after her now that she’s home.”
It felt strange to him, to be talking about home. It seemed like he had been here such a long time, speaking about Neil and Cain’s home in England was almost foreign to his tongue.

"I see. It's better for someone so young to not be far away from home in an unknown place such as this." Chuckling for a moment, he remembers how confused Yuuri was when he first arrived in Shin Makoku, although he had been older than Miss Merryweather.

Sighing, Gunter's expression once again grew grim and his voice silent.

Riff‘s posture relaxed, and again he gave Gunter a concerned look. Perhaps in certain situations (situations like these) it would be better if he were direct.

“Gunter,” he said in a serious tone, leaning back in toward him. “I will understand if you wish not to tell me, but there is obviously something bothering you.” he sighed himself, unwillingly adding to the darkening mood of the conversation.
“Is there anything I can do for you, friend?”

"Hmm? Something bothering me? ah...ha ha ha" Gunter had become engulfed in nervousness, but quickly stopped his laughter with a deep clearing of his throat.

"I... I've found myself in a bit of a difficult situation. You see..." He pauses, not sure of how much he can say before Aion finds out, but he knows Riff is trust worthy, and can only hope there aren't spies for Aion lurking nearby.

"...It was after I separated from Anissina-dono. I had run into a stranger in the park, and was invited to a cafe so we could properly become aquainted. He must have just arrived in this world. After that... things... took a rather uncomfortable route. Belive me when I say I'd like to tell you more, but it's for your own safety that I keep as much secret as possible. To be able to meet with you today is a privlidge I, Gunter deeply cherish. I pray to Shinou that you do not encounter him."

Riff furrowed his brow.
The phrases ‘uncomfortable route’ and ‘for your own safety’ did not sit well with the silver-haired man. He wondered how his friend had gotten involved with such a fearsome sounding person so soon after they parted ways, and he found himself already worried for Gunter’s well being.

“I’m glad to be able to meet with you also; but what do you mean? Is this man some kind of crime lord? He hasn’t hurt you, has he?” He asked.

The man must have at least threatened Gunter. It was the only sensible reason he could think of for why Gunter wouldn’t want to fully explain the situation. It also occurred to him that this might be the same scoundrel who had attacked Miss Emmeline.
He hoped that wasn’t the case.

Noticing that the taller man was beginning to worry, he tried to think of something that he could say that would ease his mind, but he couldn't come up with anything. Sighing, he dropped his voice, to try and prevent being overheard, although the room itself was rather soundproof.

"I'm not sure what his objectives are. He is likely not a peaceful person. And... what he has done..." Gunter pauses, recalling the events in the restroom of the cafe. Clearing his throat, he continues, "...was more damaging to my pride than my physical well being."

The corners of the taller man’s lips slowly pulled downward, tugging his mouth into a frown.
“Gunter, I don’t care for this at all.” he said, lowering his voice to match his friends. He didn’t want him in this sort of situation, but it seemed from the way Gunter was speaking of him this man was not someone who would be easy to deal with.
“You should distance yourself from this person.” he continued.

Sighing deeply, he was upset with himself for getting into the situation to begin with and now was even more sad that he was making is friend upset.

"I'm terribly sorry, Riff. I want to distance myself from him, but he is quickly gaining other followers and will likely have them watch my actions. Should I disobey, anyone that I make or have made contact will could be in grave danger. Also, at this juncture, I'm not even certain who he is commanding. This is far more dangerous than a war, as he is moving quickly and stealthily. Please, be careful, and take extra care of your Cain. I am relieved that Yuuri-heika is not in this place to potentially fall victim to this demon."
