She didn't want to knock. She wanted to do what she would have done, before, and just walk right in, because he was expecting her, after all, and she was the forceful one, the one that was chasing. But she didn't.

Emmeline sighed and knocked on the door to the house that Cain was apparently living in. She couldn't help but smile a little. He had invited her for tea, and they hadn't seen each other in quite a while.

That he was meeting with her of his own accord did not escape her. She hadn't expected the invitation, but she was pleased by it.

At the sound of knocking, Cain stirred himself out of his thoughts and opened his mouth to call for Riff. The sound died in his throat. A moment passed in silence before he set the cup down on the table and pushed himself to his feet.

The door opened smoothly when he tugged at it, free hand already reaching out to catch Emmeline's. "How charming, ladyship. You're on time."

Emmeline couldn't help but smile truly, although she did notice the conspicuous absence of Riff at the door. She had expected him to answer it, not Cain himself.

"I'm glad I did not keep you waiting, then," she answered sweetly.

"Delightful as always, I see."

Kissing her hand came naturally, as did drawing her in close to his side while he swung the door shut. Just as naturally, he fell back from her again, dropping her hand completely and motioning her before him down the hall.

"And with such a lovely smile. A special occasion, is it, Miss Emmeline?"
