...though he looked the picture of calm assuredness... )
he paused.
It seemed like it had been ages since he woke up in this world; never in his wildest dreams had he thought he would be the one to break their promise by being away from Cain… and never for this long. It made his stomach churn.
“But now I know he is here, and was safe and in good health... at least for the time he was with you.” He concluded, keeping the smile he had originally directed toward Merry firmly on his face; despite the fact that Emmeline had already seen through it. Woman’s intuition he supposed, because the tone in her voice depicted that she knew perfectly well how worried he was, and what his inability to find Cain was doing to him.
He looked down to Merryweather, grateful that at least he could still keep her comforted despite his own anxieties, then looked over to Gunter when he began to speak.
“Sorry …for what? Gunter, you’ve done nothing wrong.” he said, surprised and confused by his companion’s sudden change in mood.

He had never once thought of Gunter as selfish. He was actually grateful for the company while traveling. And quite honestly, if Gunter hadn’t been with him unintentionally forcing him to pace himself, then Riff would have run himself ragged searching for Cain within the first few days and would have never found Merry, Miss Emmeline, or their friend Otogi.
He looked to the others for assistance, as he wasn’t quite sure how to deal Gunter‘s outburst.

"...Mr. von Christ, please. You do Riff a disservice by assuming he would consider you such," she said, just as sweetly as before, but now her haughty veneer was back in place.

Instead, he gently offered, "My deepest gratitude," as thanks to the group.

Under normal circumstances he might have been able to handle it on his own, but his worry for Cain was effecting him, and he really hadn’t any idea how to help the situation when Gunter had let his guilt get to him.
However now that he had returned to his normal countenance Riff decided that it suited the man much better than apologies and tears.
[[ooc: Rofl. That was crap. Forgive me.]]

"Must we continue this nonensese?" She asked finally, looking up.
"Riff should go look for my brother, that's quite clear. That leaves Mr. Otogi and Mr. Von Christ to take me and Miss Emmeline skating. Really. And you call yourselves adults."

“Of course.” he responded, “and please, do take care of yourself as well.” the corners of his lips tugged downward into a frown; he didn’t like that one of the few people from his home would be wandering off by herself on the streets of a place none of them were familiar with. But again, there wasn’t much he could do but worry and hope she found her way to someone trustworthy, or better yet, back to Cain.
And so, the reluctantly said their goodbyes to Miss Emmeline, and she left the restaurant, with an apparent destination in mind.
Riff decided he would stay with Merry, Otogi and Gunter, as he couldn’t bear to leave the girl alone, and had not yet seen if the other two were capable of caring for a young child. They too walked down the street with a destination in mind. A destination where they might be distracted from their worries and stresses and allow Merry to have a bit of fun.
[[ooc: Whoo! Done! Even though it was a crappy ending. x3 ]]
