Essex County, by Jeff Lemire
This is the fourth of the five Canada Reads books, and whereas I enjoyed Unless more than I expected to, I didn't care for Essex County as much as I expected I would, though I did thoroughly enjoy it. Ultimately it's a very small, intimate story about a boy finding his family, but it's delivered as a broad, century long series of dramas which culminate in the boy. I think it subtly suggests something very interesting about the way in which people in small town, rural Ontario (communities like the one in which I grew up, for instance), can be densely tied to one another, yet at the same time utterly estranged from one another.
