So, first day at a new client today and at about 9:45 the announcement comes over that there will now be a practice evacuation of the building. This is followed by the world's perkiest receptionist in a bright red hardhat asking if 'everyone could evacuate now, if that's OK'.
This is followed by an immense traffic jam on the fire stairs, and two evacuees complaining that they forgot to bring their coats ... which I find grimly hilarious since we're escaping a theoretical roasting.
This had been in my mind for most of the day and I've decided that it's an excellent idea. All companies should hold evacuations on the day new staff begin. I don't feel any safer, but I did get to know some of the people in offices around me and chances are that there would be more drills and people would be more acquainted with the procedure if it was done this way rather than the tedious once-a-year observance most companies make it.
(It also stuck me that this is the kind of thing that people describe thrillingly and in-the-moment on Twitter. Then I thought 'Don't be stupid, this is the first thing you've wanted to share with the public in years ...)
