The Bus

On the bus today, there was some guy who clearly had some sort of mental illness. He spoke in a voice that was far too loud for normal conversation, and he spoke to the bus driver as if he knew him. He may have. The man also kept twitching. This alone doesn't signify mental illness, but after getting off the bus, he continued to speak, at the same volume, as he walked through the mall. He was speaking to himself, and kept twitching in a way that was definitely involuntary. Now, I'm going to completely ignore his mental illness. I don't care.
I really disliked him.

On the bus, he was carrying on about how two Canadian soldiers had died recently in Afghanistan, at the hands of a suicide bomber. He commented several times on how worthless he believes the Afghanis to be, and stated that he believes our troops should be brought home. It was at some point during his ranting that I realized that I classify nationalism in the same category as racism and sexism.
I really don't understand all the people who are against the 'war in Afghanistan'. It is not a war. It is an occupation. Now that we are already there, whether or not we should have gone there in the first place is a moot point. We did go there, and we participated in the destruction of the country's former government. If we leave, sure, no more of our troops die, but in all likelihood, more Afghanis die than would have otherwise. I would argue that we have a moral obligation to remain there as long as is necessary, but the point of everything I just wrote was that nationalism is stupid, and people with mental illness don't make me any more tolerant or sympathetic.

Fuck you, crazy old guy.
