Chapter Three

AN: I apologize for not getting this out yesterday. My parents decided to turn off the wireless internet for the day and only have it on when I was doing something I couldn't walk away from.

Four: Withdrawal is nothing to scoff at.

Just like every other Wonderlander, Hatter expects, when he finally runs out of his admittedly small amount of Hope Tea the resulting withdrawal hits him like a Scarab to the chest.

Alice never asks him if he drank the tea he used to make his living off of. That leave Hatter able to let her go on believing that he lives by the resistances belief that the act is barbarically inhumane. It leaves him able to continue to have a single drop in his cup of tea every morning before he goes off to open up his cafe at 5:30, so that there are fresh muffins warm from the oven in time for the 6:00 crowd.

When he finally does run out Hatter seriously contemplates making a quick trip back to Wonderland to scrounge up some more. It's been almost seven months since he came to Alice's world but there's no guarantee that much time at all has passed in Wonderland. Even if years have gone by Hatter knows just who he could talk to that would probably have a supply on hand.

But he had known this day was coming so shakes his head and goes about his normal morning routine just leaving out the sweet drop of Emotion in his tea. Hatter manages to go four days without Hope before he starts really feeling the effects. At lunch on the fourth day the girl he hired to run the cash during the day (because he has no idea how to work the infernal thing) calls Alice because he's locked himself in his office and refuses to come out. After Alice finally talks him into opening the door and closing the shop for the day, he doesn't bother fighting with her decision to keep him on the couch all afternoon.

The next day he can't even get out of bed. His muscles are all spasming randomly and he's running a fever but all Hatter can think about is how he was stupid to think Alice cared about him as anything more than a friend. How he's never going to be able to save up enough of this world's damned money to buy the ring that he knows Alice likes to stop and look at on her way to her dojo.

Of course Alice goes through the Looking Glass and fetches the physician to the royal family, an eight of clubs, and Hatter knows the game's up. Alice is going to leave him and never come back because now she's going to find out that he, too, didn't really mind the Queen's exploitation of Oysters.

The physician knows right off what's wrong with Hatter. "Seen this in nearly every card in the King's deck." the woman says while going through Hatter's things. Alice gives voice to the protest that her boyfriend is unable to say but it's too late. The physician has already found the empty bottle that had been the only breakable thing to survive Mad March's rampage through his shop.

Hatter closes his eyes and tries (and fails) to fight back the horrible feelings welling up in his chest. He doesn't want to have to watch Alice leave him alone in a world not his own.
