I ran out of TV, so I finally made it to SGU.

This is not a proper reaction post - I'm only on the 4th episode and I already have so much to say that i'm not saying because I should give it more time before I do that. But, I have to say this, I have to: Rush, I do NOT like you, but that's okay because with your stress levels and all the dramatics and the shouting, you will expire sooner rather ( Read more... )

Are you speechless with apoplexy or something else?

I'm up to the tenth episode. I thought #8 was the most brilliant episode and everything a Stargate franchise episode could be. I thought #9 was everything a Stargate franchise episode usually is. I've been warned that #10-12 will either cement my interest in the show or send me screaming for the hills.

Rush really doesn't get nicer or more likable (although he has some really fine moments in #8), but it stopped bothering me. He's unreliable and untrustworthy and the first guy you want to punt through a wormhole and the last one you can. But the main difference between him and both Daniel and Rodney is that Rush is aware of people, aware of their motivations, fully socialized and willing to both nurture and abuse in ways neither Daniel nor Rodney would be able to manage. Watch his relationships with Young and Eli especially, but also TJ (especially in the episode where she's in charge). He's not just a stock asshole.

The speechless part is voluntary on the grounds that I will rant less about the stupid 'it doesn't work like that!' stuff, the annoyance from which will not fade (SGA S1 ep4, yes, I am looking at you) but can be handwaved when time has given me something more worth looking at.

I saw the warnings for future eps - it was your post that reminded me i'd said i'd give it a fair shot. Once I got passed the first episode and the worst of the scene setting stuff was done (is it just me, or did that first hour and a half feel like the non-voluntary, darker version of Rising?) it has gotten more enjoyable ( ... )

We're not supposed to like him, but to a degree that's greater than he deserves -- and that's intentional. It ties in with the fact that nobody can trust him and so every malevolent motivation anyone ascribes to him becomes quite plausible. And some of those people are suggesting these motivations for their own less-than-altruistic reasons. But we're inclined to believe them -- and the characters are inclined to believe them -- because Rush is opaque and has never given anyone cause to believe in him. Which may or may not be blinding us (and the characters) from a greater threat.

'Yeah I'm not nice, be he's even less so, so blame him'? Yeah, that would make for some interesting dynamics.

I didn't even make it through the first episode.

Cliched but true - it does get better. Or maybe that's just the Sci-Fi withdrawal talking ;)

Yeah, my sister did say that to me .... I dunno, thing is, I don't think I really like sci-fi, so... maybe I'll give it a couple of seasons then watch it so I can get by the bad stuff faster.

Ohhhh I had the same feelings towards Rush. But then at the end of the season, I didn't mind him and I haven't really stopped to puzzle it out. He's still not a favorite of mine but I guess I grew to be interested in what happens to all of them. I do feel like they did a good job of making the civilians as a whole unlikeable, although I find myself liking Eli. Won't say more because might venture into spoilerville unintentionally.

I didn't care for the first episode at all, then it took the rest of the first half for me to even care, but after episode 11 I actually started enjoying the show. I'm surprised I stuck around because normally I don't, but I was desperate for sci-fi and I had loved SG-1 and SGA so much it was easy to tune in even when I wasn't too happy with the show.

Eli needs to do something useful for me to actively like him over just the vaguely apathetic pity I feel for him atm.

This show has been shuffled to the back of the queue for months, but i'm glad I gave it a shot so far - I guess time will tell :)
